The Montane Barrier Micro Pull-On is a lightweight and highly breathable baselayer that can also be used as a light midlayer for more fast paced and high output activities. It is made from the superb Polartec Power Grid fabric for unsurpassed moisture management and breathability and features a windproof section over the chest to protect this critical area from the debilitating effects of wind chill.
Power Grid is a bi-component fabric that actively pulls moisture from the skin to the inner fabric surface, capillary moisture movement wicks sweat through to the outer fabric face where it spreads rapidly for evaporation. Polartec Power Grid moves at least 30% more moisture away from the skin than single component fabrics. The outer face of Polartec Power Grid enables sweat to spread over a vast surface area meaning it can dry at least 2 x faster than cotton. The internal grid construction is created by raised fabric pillars on the inner face. These create touch points for moisture management and movement and the open channels between these pillars ensure that the fabric delivers the highest levels of breathability, compression and the highest warmth per fabric weight.
The windproof section over the chest is provided by Montane’s own Wind Barrier Dynamic fabric, this densely woven microfibre blocks the wind and provides abrasion resistance to pack straps. The fabric is highly breathable, but not as breathable as the Polartec Power Grid so you get the bonus of some additional insulation to this critical area.
This top works really well as a technical base layer thanks to the superb moisture management or you can wear it as a light midlayer in cooler conditions. If you’ve got this on under a shell jacket and things are heating up a bit you can undo the jacket zip and remain protected from the wind chill by the windproof panel on the Barrier.
Thumb loops at the cuffs keep the warmth in when reaching high or the sleeves can be easily rolled up to dump excess heat. A single zipped chest pocket is handy for phones, GPS etc. and the half-length front zip features a wind-strip to prevent cold spots.
The combination of fabrics and clever design make this pull-on incredibly versatile across a wide range of activities from mountain biking and trail running to climbing and mountaineering.
