Rab have used a new 3 layer laminated Matrix softshell fabric for the Evasion jacket. I suppose they chose that name as it does a good job of evading the weather. The outer fabric is made up of a closely woven nylon and spandex fabric to provide strength, durability and stretch for active movement. In the middle of the 3 layer sandwich is a waterproof, windproof and breathable PU membrane that provides the weather resistance, and then finally a warm fleece inner fabric helps to wick moisture away from your skin and supplies insulation. This superb fabric feels superb on as it moves with you and is soft on the inside.
Whilst the membrane itself is completely waterproof the Evasion jacket is not 100% waterproof as the seams are not taped. Realistically though this is not meant to be a replacement for a waterproof shell jacket but it does provide ample weather protection if you get caught out in changeable conditions. For the tech heads out there the membrane has a hydrostatic head of 15,000mm and a MVTR of 20,000; which is on par with a good quality shell jacket.
The Evasion jacket is perfect for our typically changeable conditions and is the kind of softshell jacket that you can stick on at the start of the day and leave it on whatever your chosen activity. However it works just as well as a round-town jacket thanks to the subtle design and clean lines.
Storage duties are taken care of by two YKK zipped hand pockets and a YKK zipped chest pocket and other features include stretch woven cuffs and a nice high, close fitting collar to seal out the drafts.
Whilst this may not be most blingy or exciting softshell jacket available it does perform superbly, fits well and copes admirably with a variety of uses and applications.
