The Cerium SL is beautifully made, as you would expect from Arc’teryx, but the really clever thing is the way that they have made the jacket so light. Traditional down jackets are made lighter by simply reducing the amount of down and using super lightweight, fragile materials. Arc’teryx however have stuffed the Cerium SL with 850 fill power European Goose Down and given it a über lightweight face fabric. This is a great all year-round mid-layer that will even cover you for some highly active winter sports.
Weight reduction has been achieved through ingenious engineering techniques. For example, the baffles on the elbows and back are narrower in places to match the bodies naturally curves, meaning these areas don’t needs as much fabric. The elasticated hem pulls in the bottom of the jacket and the whole thing is anatomically cut to reduce surplus fabrics and therefore weight.
The Cerium also uses strategically placed Coreloft siliconised polyester synthetic insulation in areas that receive the most moisture and are affected by compression. This is found in the shoulders hem, sleeves, and underarms. Coreloft retains warmth even when wet and resists compression better than down. This way you get the best of both types of insulation.
The 7-denier face fabric is a mini rip stop Nylon which has been treated with a DWR (durable water repellent), so it is tough, wind resistant yet breathable and the smooth face allows for easy layering.
The end result of all this technology, superior craftsmanship and Arc’teryx gorgeousness is a down jacket that fits fantastically well, and only weighs 185g.
