The Ferrosi Jacket has been widely hailed for it's magical skill of having exactly the amount of weather resistance and breathability that climbers, backpackers and everyone in between needed.
The outer fabric is constructed from an ultra durable Nylon and Spandex mix, combining the durability and tear resistance of Nylon with the flexibility and stretch of Spandex. Because the fabrics are so tightly woven and well constructed, wind and moisture finds it incredibly hard to push through. This would be pretty water and wind resistant as it is, but just for good measure Outdoor Research have added a DWR (durable water repellant) coating. This not only improves the lifespan of the jacket but also increases the breahability as the fabric isn't becoming water logged. This doesn't mean the Ferrosi is waterproof however, because if it were then the breathability would be no where near what it is now. Having said that, it'll hold off rain for a substantial amount of time before it begins to creep through.
Just as important as the fabric is the fit of the jacket. If the jacket doesn't fit or is restrictive, it's useless. The Ferrosi is one of the best all rounded softshells available in terms of fit, with a non restrictive cut which mirrors your movements whatever you're doing, whether that's climbing, walking, biking or travelling. In fact, OR loved their creation so much that the only change they made to the jacket was to add some thumb loops and change a few colours and logos.
YKK DWR treated zips are used throughout for added protection, while a chest and two hand pockets provide storage for small bits and pieces. The left pocket also acts as a stuff sack for travel use or as an emergency jacket to whip on when the wind picks up. Elastic cuffs block out the wind from going up your sleeves and an elastic drawcord around the waist improves the fit and functionality of the Ferrosi.
