The GriGri+ is the latest addition to Petzl's assisted braking belay device family. The clever camming action pinches the rope to assist the belayer in the event of a fall and the new antic-panic handle makes this new device particulalry suitable for beginners or inexperienced climbers. The standard belaying technique should always be applied when using the GriGri+ as it is not an autoblock device.
Developed to meet the needs of all climbers the GriGri+ works really well across a wide range of rope diameters and performs smoothly when top roping or lead climbing. The device works best on ropes between 8.9-10.5mm, but will operate effectively down to 8.5mm and up to 11mm. The addition of the "anti-panic" handle means that if the belayer pulls too hard on the release handle the device will lock the rope preventing an uncontrolled descent, which is a big improvement over previous models. The internal camming has been refined to make descending much more progressive and smooth and the overall ergonomics have been improved for easier handling.
A climbing mode selection switch allows you to choose between top-roping and lead modes; in top rope mode the device lets you take up slack, but not give it out, making for a more comfortable belay without sacrficing safety. To prevent unwanted tampering with the mode selection switch it can be locked in the preferred position.
As with all Petzl products the GriGri+ is manufactured to exacting standards with the safety of the user always in mind, clearly engraved diagrams, inside and outside show how to correctly feed the rope so users can easily check that their device is properly set up. The GriGri+ requires that users apply the classic belay techinque with both hands on the rope and falls being arrested by tightening the hand of the free rope, please don't expect the GriGri to do it for you, learn how to belay correctly and stay safe.
