Mountaineers have dreams about these boots. The Phantom Tech's are Scarpa's idea of the perfect winter climbing and mountaineering boot. It features their state of the art last, an OutDry membrane and Primaloft insulation to keep you warm, dry and comfortable whatever the weather is doing.
The Phantom features Primaloft insulation to keep your feet toasty during cold winter climbs. Primaloft is one of the warmest forms of insulation due to the densely woven construction of the fabric; therefore it can trap more heat than an alternative insulation with a looser construction.
Surrounding all this insulation is an OutDry membrane, designed to keep you dry and comfortable. OutDry breaks away from the standard mould of waterproof membranes and actually laminates the membrane directly to the external layer of the boot, meaning it's far more breathable, durable and reliable than many other alternatives. Since it sits far closer to the outer of the boot, an OutDry membrane decreases the amount of fabric that the water can sink into. OutDry is also developed in Italy with collaboration with Japanese company, Komatsu Seiren co.
Even the midsole is gloriously techy, with Carbon Fibre used to increase stiffness and reduce weight down to something minisclule for a boot of this calibre. Underneath this midsole is probably the most understated part of the boot, the sole. The Vibram Zero Gravity sole is used throughout the Phantom range, but with different quantities of rubber used in each model. In the Phantom 8000 for example, the whole sole is yellow, a softer, more insulated sole that'll spend most of it's life in the snow. The Phantom Tech of course is far from that and requires more durability, therefore you'll notice the picture above features black sections which are far more durable, while the orange sections in the centre offer insulation and shock absorption. Clever, right?
