The Phantom 6000 is one of the most versatile options out of the exceptional Phantom range. Crafted by those who live, work and play in the mountains, the Phantom is designed for mixed climbing, ice fall and high altitude mountaineering.
Scarpa use their AG Last in the Phantom range, a last tried and tested on Mont Blanc. 50 years of knoweledge from Scarpa have gone into this design, providing a naturally shaped toe area for climbing and a forefoot shape to give a precise fit with the greatest comfort.
Providing the weather resistance on the Phantom is an Outdry membrane and Flexseal waterproof zippers. Outdry breaks away from the standard mould of waterproof membranes and actually laminates the membrane directly to the external layer of the boot, meaning it's far more breathable, durable and reliable than many other alternatives. Since it sits far closer to the outer of the boot, an Outdry membrane decreases the amount of fabric that the water can sink into. Outdry is also developed in Italy with collaboration with Japanese company, Komatsu Seiren co.
As you would expect, a high altitude boot has to be warm enough to deal with almost polar-like temperatures. The Phantom features an inner boot with Primaloft insulation. Primaloft is one of the warmest forms of insulation due to the densely woven construction of the fabric; therefore it can trap more heat than an alternative insulation with a looser construction. This is then backed up with a 4mm thick thermoisolated EVA foam to trap more heat that may escape.
Moving up to the gaiter of the Phantom, it is constructed from three materials to offer durability, stretch and comfort. Elasticated S-Tech is used on pressure point areas such as the foot insep and the backward area, while the external fabric is made from a mix of super-tough Nylon and Kevlar. These durable outer fabrics provide abrasion resistance and all-round durability when dealing with crampon strikes, rock abrasion and general wear and tear.
A really interesting aspect of Scarpa's Phantom range is the sole itself. Above you'll see a picture of the sole; it's centre is orange while the outer sections are black. The black areas offer increased durability, while the orange areas are insulated but far softer. On Scarpa's 8000m boot for example, the whole sole is orange as it'll be used entirely on snow, whereas the Phantom 6000 requires a mix of both to offer the greatest mix of durability and grip.
