The Charmoz is a stiff, B2 rated boot, ideally suited towards winter mountaineering, summer alpinism and general mountain terrain.
Developed by Scarpa for their Rebel range of footwear, the NAG last was designed to provide exceptional comfort for technical use with a strong emphasis on focusing the climbing power over the toe/front of the boot. This creates a more precise, technical mountain fit.
Sandwiched between the sole and the footbed is Scarpa's ACTIV Impact Technology. This system used for sole construction uses materials with physical and chemical characteristics, meaning it's able to absorb negative impact with the ground, increasing shock absorption and maximising the energy used in the movement. On the front of the Vibram sole is a flatter, thinner region appropriately named "climbing zone". This allows more feel underfoot and increases the practicality while climbing or during approach.
Scarpa's Autofit Collar massively increases the comfort around the back of the foot by adding padding to specific areas and shaping it in a way that reduces stress that rests on the Achillis and malleous area. Adding further comfort is a memory foam system. The way this works is the natural heat of your foot will warm up the memory foam attached to the heel of the boot, therefore moulding it to your foot and providing a more secure fit as your foot is in contact with the upper of the boot a lot more than without. This technical solution to a better fit is extremely light and breathable and will recover back to it's original shape after every use.
An issue that arose with many older stiffer boots was that to gain the stiffness, the ankle had to be stiff too, therefore reducing the movement around that area. Scarpa's Flex Point allows the ankle to move with complete freedom, even in the stiffest of boots whist maintaining support and confidence on all terrain.
To increase the fit even further in the Charmoz is Scarpa's speed lacing system. Integrated within the upper are specifically designed eyelets to allow the laces to pass through freely and without strenuous effort, making it simple and easy to adjust the volume and fit of the boot. This system allows the boot to wrap around the foot in a far more customisable and superior way.
Designed and constructed to last in mountainous terrain; the Charmoz is wrapped in a full 360 degree rubber rand to offer increased durability, protection and abrasion resistance against rocks and technical paths.
In the past, Gore-Tex has always been the go-to fabric to provide dependable waterproofing, however a different approach has been looked at recently. A fabric called Outdry have set out to revolutionise the waterproof system we use for footwear by looking at what is currently wrong with membrane fabrics and setting out to fix it. The way this works is that the waterproof, breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of the shoe, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point. Another benefit to this technology is that because the membrane is attached to the inside of the outer fabric, the water is stopped straight away rather than after it has passed through many layers of fabric to the mid of the boot. Outdry technology is not an additional membrane, but a new innovation in waterproof fabrics.
