The way it works is by using GEOS signalling; this service has supported rescues in over 140 countries and is one of the most reliable services when your phone is no longer any use. Built in GPS also allows your friends and family to see where you are at any given time using built-in tracking. If you're unsure of where you are going, the inReach also features a built-in compass that shows bearing and distance along a route.
To access the network and communicate with your inReach device, an active satellite subscription is required. Depending on your usage level, you can opt for an annual contract package or flexible month-to-month airtime plan.
This little tool isn't just a tracking device, it is able to offer a detailed weather report when connected to the Earthmate app, so you'll be able to track conditions en route. You can also request weather forecasts for destinations or waypoints that you haven't reached yet.
