What is the Borealis Tour?
The Borealis is one of the lightest, most breathable and most versatile softshell jackets in existence. Use it for mountaineering, walking, climbing, scrambling, walking around town, as a midlayer, as an outer layer, the possibilities are endless!
What is the Borealis made from?
The Borealis is made using Rab's Matrix softshell fabric; this fabric is is water resistant, wind resistant, super stretchy, UPF 50+ rated and durable enough for just about any activity. The lightweight nature of this fabric also means it will pack down to a size not much bigger than an apple.
What are the Borealis' features?
The beauty of this jacket is that it is beautifully simple; you get two zipped hand pockets which sit out of the way of harnesses and hipbelts, one main zip, a drawcord adjustable collar, a hem drawcord and some reflective logos. The left hand pocket will also double up as a stuff-sack if you need to clip it to your harness or throw it into your rucksack.
How does it fit?
The Borealis fits into Rab's 'slim' category, however you can easily fit a mid-weight fleece underneath if you choose to use it as an outer layer. The super stretchy fabric also ensures you're not restricted, even with layers underneath.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
We've been using the Borealis for years here at Trekitt, and have worn it as an outer layer or a midlayer. It's a brilliant outer layer in the summer with just a t-shirt/baselayer underneath, yet works in the winter over insulating layers when moving quickly.
Summary
Quite rightly the Boreas was awarded a coveted Backpacking Magazine Editor’s Choice award, it is also one of our favourite bits of kit and once you own one it will become indispensable.
