What is the Proton?
The Proton is the perfect balance between air permeability and abrasion and weather resistance - the result is a jacket that helps shield you from the elements but also breathes exceptionally well and allows air to pass freely in and out - even during high output activities. It particularly excels when you're out climbing, scrambling and on long summer alpine routes.
What is the Proton made of?
Insulation: The Proton uses Octa Loft insulation throughout the jacket. Octa Loft is a highly breathable synthetic insulation that traps heat whilst simultaneously allowing air to freely pass through it - this gives you a great mid layer for summer alpine routes when you still need protection but you need a jacket that you won't sweat buckets in. Octa Loft also dries quickly if you get caught out with the weather and will still keep you warm if it gets wet.
Outer Fabric: Encasing all of this gorgeous insulation is Fortius Air 20 - a lightweight, abrasion and wind resistant fabric that also allows air to pass freely through it. The combination of this outer fabric with this insulation gives you a versatile jacket that is able to self-regulate, preventing vapour and moisture build-up meaning you can keep it on all day even in a varying range of temperatures and output levels.
What are the features?
The Proton has a low profile, insulated, adjustable, helmet compatible hood that actually works well under a helmet too. It's generous enough to sit comfortably over a helmet but also cinches right down to sit snug to your head when you don't have a helmet on. The Proton also has two zippered chest pockets and two zippered hand pockets - all of which sit out of the way of the harness line so bits in your pockets don't dig in whilst you're climbing. At the bottom of the jacket you'll find dual hem adjusters to help keep the wind out and HemLocks - these stop the jacket from riding up out of your harness when you're climbing.
How does the Proton fit?
The Proton fits into Arcteryx's 'Trim Fit' fit block, which means it is designed to sit snug to your body with room for a layer or two underneath but doesn't have lots of excess material that will flap around in the wind.
Where does the Proton fit in the layering system?
The Proton FL is an insulating jacket that works well as a stand-alone jacket on still, mild to chilly days, but can also be layered up under a shell in colder, damp conditions. Due to the fact that the Proton FL is highly air permeable, you will find that you will benefit from putting a wind shell over the top of it if it is blowing a gale.
Summary
The Proton FL is a highly versatile jacket that is able to self-regulate, preventing vapour and moisture build-up meaning you can keep it on all day even in a varying range of temperatures and output levels; it will end up being you go to for all your high output mountain adventure this season!
