What are the Manaslu Pants?

The Manaslu Pants are a full spec mountaineering pant offering total protection from wind, rain and abrasion in the harshest of conditions. You’d expect nothing less from a set of waterproof trousers named after the world’s 8th highest mountain and considered the 4th most dangerous 8000m peak. The Manaslu Pants have been designed specifically for women, offering an alpine fit for maximum articulation, with the reliable protection of Gore-Tex Pro fabrics to keep you dry and safe from the wind.

What are the Manaslu Pants made from?

The Manaslu Pants are made from the ever-reliable Gore-Tex Pro 80D. The 100% polyamide material ensures the trousers are completely waterproof and windproof, offering vital protection from anything the elements can throw at you, making the Manaslu Pants some of the finest hard shell legwear there is for the committed female alpinist and winter climber.

To help ensure the pants deal with the rigours of alpinism they have been reinforced with a bonded overlay (the grey patches near the waist) to act as protection from ice screws and other parts of your climbing rack cutting the Gore-Tex when used with a harness.

Dyneema kick strip reinforcements are also in place to further help with abrasion resistance and to hopefully cut down on crampon-related holes.

What are its features?

The Manaslu Pants have been designed with alpinism and winter climbing in mind, so their features lean heavily into this. Primarily they are a waterproof trouser, offering waterproofing and windproofing to tame the worst of what the elements throw at you. The fabric is highly abrasion resistant, with reinforcements in key areas (ice screw patches and dyneema kickplates) to further enhance the protection. Full length 2-way YKK Aquaguard zips make getting the pants on and off a breeze, allowing you to fully open them and throw on over boots and all your other gear. The pants are then held in place by fully adjustable braces with a drop seat, nobody wants their trousers to fall down on a winter climb. A YKK fly zip is also included for convenience. Enhanced knee articulation is in place to ensure high levels of articulation. Zip-out internal snow gaiters have been included to keep all that snow ingress at bay, offering a great seal around your boots.

How do the Manaslu Pants fit?

The Manaslu Pants have been designed to fit within Mountain Equipment’s female specific Alpine Fit. This fit is designed to allow for layering over baselayers whilst still keeping bulk to a minimum to avoid excess fabric that may get in the way when climbing, it also helps to keep overall weight lower (595g)

Where does it fit in the layering system?

Over a baselayer and/or trousers. The Manaslu Pants are an overtrouser so they are designed to be worn over all other layers.

Care and maintenance

To keep your outdoor clothing and equipment in tip top condition and performing to its maximum we recommend the use of Nikwax products. We have been using Nikwax products since day one (26th March 1986) and have found them to be totally reliable, dependable and effective. Today’s Nikwax treatments contain environmentally friendly elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to fabric fibres, leaving the spaces between open and breathable. These stretchy polymers are able to stretch and move with the fabric so they stay put for longer and work better.

Nikwax treatments will not change the look or feel of the fabric and they are all water based, environmentally safe, non-flammable and contain no nasty Fluorocarbons. Nikwax products can be used to clean, re-proof and revitalise all your outdoor technical clothing and equipment.

Waterproof breathable clothing has a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish applied to the face fabric during the manufacturing process. The DWR forces water to bead up and roll off the surface therefore preventing the fabric from absorbing moisture. If the outside of your jacket is soaked in a layer of cold water, the warm damp air within can’t escape and will condense on the inside. This makes the jacket feel cold clammy and can make you think that it’s leaking. The DWR finish is not permanent and needs to be maintained and revitalised to optimise performance.

This three layer waterproof jacket should be cleaned regularly with Nikwax Tech Wash; I wash my jacket about once a month, or more often if it gets really filthy. Regular washing with Tech Wash will maintain the DWR for longer and remove salts and oils that can contaminate the fabric, and it will keep your lovely jacket clean and smelling fresh. Washing can be done in a machine according to the manufacturers care guidelines (on the internal label). First clean out any detergent and conditioner residue from the machine dispenser and then add the required amount of Tech Wash and away you go. Hand washing is also suitable but be sure to rinse the garment well.

When you notice that rain/water is no longer beading up and rolling off it’s time to re-proof. Nikwax TX Direct will re-instate a long lasting DWR to completely rejuvenate your jacket. Re-proofing can also be done in the machine once a garment has been washed. Just add the TX-Direct and use the same programme you used for washing. You can also use the spray-on product on a damp garment that has just been washed.

You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari and never have it serviced, so make sure you regularly wash and re-proof your quality kit.
