What is the Prophet Jacket?

The Prophet Jacket has been designed as an ultra-light and highly protective, synthetically insulated jacket. It benefits from several technologies to help it offer high level of warmth and weather resistance in challenging conditions whilst managing to keep the weight and pack size extremely low.

It’s the perfect jacket for when insulation and breathability are paramount and water resistance is important. So, is it 100% waterproof? Technically M.E cannot give the Prophet a 100% waterproof guarantee, but practically this is as waterproof as you’ll need for winter mountaineering.

What is the Prophet Jacket made from?

Starting on the outside - The outer of the Prophet Jacket is made using a 10D Gore-Tex Infinium shell, an ultralight nylon fabric is backed up by the new Gore Infinium Windstopper membrane. Basically, it’s the same expanded ePTFE that you find in waterproof jackets, but it’s made of fewer layers and therefore not 100% waterproof. Mountain Equipment have even gone as far as taping all the seams to make the prophet as water resistant as possible.

Gore Infinium will easily resist light rain and snow, but the big advantage comes in its fantastic breathability. Infinium is far more breathable than Gore Pro, or even Gore Active, making it the perfect material for fast paced mountain activities in cold conditions.

Insulation - The Prophet Jacket is filled with 80g Primaloft Gold synthetic insulation to give mid weight insulation and a great warmth to weight ratio with a tiny pack size. Primaloft Gold is the top of the range in terms of synthetic insulation, it’s lightweight, compressible, massively water resistant and will retain virtually all its insulation even when wet.

What are the features?

The Primaloft Gold insulation and Gore-Tex Infinium are the highlights of the Prophet, but it is a truly feature-rich jacket that betrays its modest weight of only 510g (in a size large).

Starting from the top, an insulated helmet compatible hood with a stiffened visor provides full head protection and also fits nicely over a beanie, or a bare head, thanks to the volume reducing drawcord at the back.

A two-way moulded YKK zip with insulated rear baffle allows for full operation with a harness, whilst that insulated baffle avoids a cold spot underneath the zip.

Two zipped hand warmer pockets a single napoleon chest pocket and an internal zipped security pocket take care of storage. The right-hand pocket also doubles up as the stuff sack, with twin carabiner carry loops when folded into it.

You also get a zipped chest pocket and an internal zipped mesh pocket, the perfect place to store your electric devices to optimise battery output.

Adjustable cuffs and a dual tether hem drawcord round out the features and help to keep all that precious warmth in the jacket when you need it the most. The dual tether drawcord eliminates the cord loop which can snag and allows you to customise the fit of the Prophet, tight at the back, loose at the front, or vice versa.

How does the Prophet Jacket fit?

The Prophet Jacket has an alpine fit, so expect a fairly slim fit through the body and waist, with a little more room and articulation in the arms and shoulders. The arms are nice and long to ensure the wrist and back of hands are well protected.

Where does this fit in the layering system?

The Prophet is primarily designed to a protective and insulating outer layer. However, due to the excellent breathability of the Gore Infinium, it works well as a mid-layer in more extreme conditions.

How Should Your Insulated Jacket Fit?

Insulated jackets are pedantic little things. Too tight and you'll compress the insulation and limit the warmth capabilities of your brand new jacket, too loose and you'll spend hours warming up the dead space inside the jacket. Getting the correct fit isn't just about aesthetics, it will determine how warm you are.

The Incorrect Fit

Too loose: A jacket which is too loose will keep you relatively warm, however it will take far longer to do so and will waste large amounts of your precious energy. An insulated jacket works by trapping the natural heat that your body gives off in the fibres of the insulation; this creates a micro-climate inside your jacket, keeping you warm and toasty. If your jacket is too loose, heat will be able to escape through the hem, the sleeves and the neck of the jacket; it's a little like sticking the heating on in your car with the windows cracked open - it will heat up, just incredibly slowly.

Too tight: A jacket which is too tight is arguably worse than one that is too loose. If your jacket is far too tight, the baffles can compress to a point where the insulation can't loft effectively, limiting the amount of warmth it can trap. Essentially, it won't work!

The Correct Fit
It's a tricky one to explain, but it's somewhere in the middle. You've first got to consider how many layers you'll tend to wear underneath; will you have just a t-shirt then the jacket, or possibly a baselayer, midlayer and then the jacket? When you've figured out your layers and you've popped your insulated jacket over the top, you shouldn't have any dead space inside. The cuffs and hem should be comfortably sealed around your waist and wrists with room to move. You should be able to lift an arm up above your head without the hem of the jacket lifting more than an inch or so, and the sleeves should be long enough that when carrying out the same motion, they aren't mid-way up your forearm. Your shoulders and chest area should have enough room so that your hands can touch behind your back without feeling restricted.

Additional Information
Lastly, consider which activites you'll primarily be carrying out while wearing the jacket. Are you primarily using it as a winter climbing piece, or an everyday/dog walking jacket? You'll find that technical climbing jackets tend to feature a shorter cut, while urban and casual jackets feature a longer cut to offer additional warmth with less mobility.
