What is the Prophet Jacket?

The Prophet Jacket has been designed as an ultra-light and highly protective, synthetically insulated jacket. It benefits from a number of technologies to help it offer high level of warmth and weather resistance in challenging conditions whilst managing to keep the weight and pack size low. It’ll become your new go-to piece when out in the depths of scottish winters on challenging test pieces, as well as on those Alaskan couloirs. It’s also just as well suited to those of us that like to move fast and light through the mountains, but require an insulating jacket that doesn’t cut out on the features but is still ultra-light to keep that pack weight low.

What is the Prophet Jacket made from?

The Prophet Jacket is made primarily from Primaloft Gold synthetic insulation (80g throughout), offering great warmth to weight ratio and pack size, as well as the other usual characteristics of a synthetic insulation, namely its ability to insulate when wet. The insulation is also in sheet format, making it overall more water resistant and protective from the elements.

The outer fabric of the Prophet Jacket is where things start to get really interesting. It features a 10D Gore-Tex Infinium shell, an ultralight polyamide fabric that is durably weather resistant against light rain and snow. Made for when comfort and performance take priority over all-out waterproofing, Gore-Tex Infinium still manages to offer fantastic weather resistance. To further help with the weather protection, the Prophet features a seam-sealed construction, making it much harder for water ingress to become a problem.

What are the features?

The aforementioned Primaloft insulation and Gore-Tex Infinium are the highlight features of the Prophet, but it is a truly feature-rich jacket that betrays it’s modest weight (510g). Starting from the top, an insulated helmet compatible hood with a stiffened visor ensure total upper body protection, either under or over a helmet depending on preference and conditions. The jacket has an alpine fit to cut down on bulk and articulated arms to ensure full range of motion when climbing and belaying. A two way YKK zip with insulated rear baffle allows for full operation with a harness, whilst that insulated baffle avoids a cold spot underneath the zip. Two zipped hand warmer pockets a single napoleon chest pocket and an internal zipped security pocket take care of storage. One of the hand pockets also has double duty as the stuff sack, with twin carabiner carry loops when folded into it. Adjustable cuffs and a dual tether hem drawcord round out the features and help to keep all that precious warmth in the jacket when you need it the most.

How does the Prophet Jacket fit?

The Prophet Jacket has an alpine fit to it, so expect a fairly slim fit through the body and waist, with a little more room and articulation in the arms and shoulders. It is designed to be a midlayer or lightweight outer, so you will find enough room underneath for a baselayer and possibly another midlayer, whilst still not too bulky as it will comfortably fit underneath your winter shell in truly horrible conditions.

Where does this fit in the layering system?

The Prophet is designed primarily as a midlayer or lightweight outer layer, meaning it has a relatively trim fit so as to avoid bulk, but will comfortably fit underneath a shell should it need to.

Care & Advice

How Should Your Insulated Jacket Fit?

Insulated jackets are pedantic little things. Too tight and you'll compress the insulation and limit the warmth capabilities of your brand new jacket, too loose and you'll spend hours warming up the dead space inside the jacket. Getting the correct fit isn't just about aesthetics, it will determine how warm you are.

The Incorrect Fit

Too loose: A jacket which is too loose will keep you relatively warm, however it will take far longer to do so and will waste large amounts of your precious energy. An insulated jacket works by trapping the natural heat that your body gives off in the fibres of the insulation; this creates a micro-climate inside your jacket, keeping you warm and toasty. If your jacket is too loose, heat will be able to escape through the hem, the sleeves and the neck of the jacket; it's a little like sticking the heating on in your car with the windows cracked open - it will heat up, just incredibly slowly.

Too tight: A jacket which is too tight is arguably worse than one that is too loose. If your jacket is far too tight, the baffles can compress to a point where the insulation can't loft effectively, limiting the amount of warmth it can trap. Essentially, it won't work!

The Correct Fit
It's a tricky one to explain, but it's somewhere in the middle. You've first got to consider how many layers you'll tend to wear underneath; will you have just a t-shirt then the jacket, or possibly a baselayer, midlayer and then the jacket? When you've figured out your layers and you've popped your insulated jacket over the top, you shouldn't have any dead space inside. The cuffs and hem should be comfortably sealed around your waist and wrists with room to move. You should be able to lift an arm up above your head without the hem of the jacket lifting more than an inch or so, and the sleeves should be long enough that when carrying out the same motion, they aren't mid-way up your forearm. Your shoulders and chest area should have enough room so that your hands can touch behind your back without feeling restricted.

Additional Information
Lastly, consider which activites you'll primarily be carrying out while wearing the jacket. Are you primarily using it as a winter climbing piece, or an everyday/dog walking jacket? You'll find that technical climbing jackets tend to feature a shorter cut, while urban and casual jackets feature a longer cut to offer additional warmth with less mobility.
