What is the Beta SV?
The Beta SV sits at the top of the Beta tree in Arc'teryx's range. It's the toughest, gnarliest option for those who require an all-rounded outer layer for walking, trekking, alpinism, mountaineering, climbing... you get the picture.
What is it made of?
Starting from the outside and moving our way in, Arc'teryx equip the Beta SV with a tough-as-nails 80D nylon throughout the jacket, ensuring abrasion and overall weather resistance is kept as high as possible. Underneath this, a Gore-Tex Pro membrane shields you from the elements by providing a fully water and windproof barrier. Gore-Tex Pro is one of the most durable and reliable membranes available, making it the perfect companion to the already reliable and bombproof outer fabric. Finally, a nylon inner fabric protects the membrane and allows the jacket to slip easily over additional layers.
Despite its tough nature, you'll be impressed how breathable the Beta SV is thanks to clever construction techniques. For example, the only part of a waterproof jacket which won't breathe is the seam taping, therefore Arc'teryx developed a tape which is just 8mm wide, reducing the amount of non-breathable fabric. You've also got two large pit zips, but more about that below.
What are the features?
Starting at the top, you get a fully helmet compatible StormHood with custom Cohaesive Cordlock adjusters, two front hand pockets which sit high enough to avoid rucksack hipbelts or harnesses, one left bicep pocket, an internal security pocket and a large dump pocket. All of these pockets feature Arc'teryx's seamless RS zipper sliders which ditch the need for a zip garage, slotting neatly into the recess at the top of the zip. Lastly, large pit zips under each arm allow you to dump heat quickly and effectively without exposing yourself to the elements.
How does it fit?
The SV, being the toughest in Arc'teryx's range, features a slightly roomier cut to allow extra layers to fit underneath in cold, unforgiving conditions. The shoulders feature plenty of room for movement and the length is long enough for those over 6ft.
Where does this fit in the layering system?
As you may have guessed, this is designed to be your outer layer, protecting you against foul weather. For more of an insight into layering, we'd recommend watching our video below.
