What is the Thorium AR jacket?

Sleek, flattering and tough enough to accompany you on all your adventures - The Arcteryx Thorium AR Hooded Jacket is best described as a versatile and lightweight, yet durable, do-it-all down insulated jacket. The clue’s in the name, Arcteryx use the suffice AR to describe their range of All-Round products. So, this big, toasty jacket is perfect for just about any outdoor activity where you need reliable warmth and protection from nasty winter conditions.

What is the Thorium AR Hood made from?

Fabric: The outer fabric of the Thorium AR Hood is made using the new Arato 30 Nylon that has a durable and subtly textured, non-shiny finish, is abrasion resistant and can be packed down nice and easily. The outside of this new fabric is treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellant) to help repel light rain and snow, but please note that the Thorium AR Hood is NOT waterproof so layer it up under a waterproof shell if, and when, it starts raining hard.

Insulation: I described the Thorium AR as a down jacket earlier, but to be totally accurate it’s filled with natural down and synthetic Coreloft insulation. Arcteryx call this process “Down Composite Mapping” and it places each type of insulation where it works best. 110g of 750-fill power European Goose Down (about the best there is) is used in the sleeves and around the core, and Coreloft is used in the hood, cuffs and under the arms, areas that get exposed to the most moisture and need to dry quicker.

OK, let’s get technical for a moment. The effectiveness of down insulation is measured using fill power, in this case 750. This is a recognised measurement of how “fluffy” the insulation is, or how well it lofts. The “fluffier” down is the more space it can occupy and the more warm air it can trap. So, the Fill Power describes the amount of space one ounce of down will occupy in cubic inches when allowed to reach its maximum loft.

What are the main features

One of the most important features of the Thorium AR is its fantastic cut and fit, the jacket just feels so good when you’ve got it on and the fact that it’s weather resistant, breathable, lightweight, compressible and wind resistant makes it perfect for all cold weather activities.

But back to more tangible features, let’s start at the top with the hood. Arcteryx call the design a “StormHood”, this means that it provides full face protection in stormy weather and it can be used over a helmet for those freezing belays or winter mountaineering.

Storage wise, you get two zipped hand pockets and an internal zipped pocket to keep essentials like phones and GPS safely tucked away; the hand pockets are big enough to easily swallow hats and gloves. Articulated sleeves are finished off with a neat elasticated trim to seal out the cold and the hem is dropped at the back for added protection and can be sealed off with an adjustable drawcord.

How does the Thorium AR Hood Fit?

As an insulating piece it’s designed to fit pretty closely to maximise the insulation. The last thing you want is a big baggy jacket as you’ll waste energy warming up all that dead air space, and conversely you don’t want it too tight either as that’ll hinder the downs ability to fully loft.  With the Arcteryx Regular Fit there’s enough room for lightweight layers yet it still fits closely to ensure maximum performance.

The arms are nice and long and don’t restrict your movement if you have to reach when climbing or scrambling.

Where does the Thorium AR Hood fit in the layering system?

The Thorium AR is a mid-weight, breathable and packable down jacket making it perfect as a hugely versatile and very warm insulating layer depending on your activity level and the weather conditions. It also works perfectly well as a stand-alone jacket on those crisp, dry, freezing days or as a warm everyday jacket. Layering is not a precise science and there is no one perfect system that will suit every person, situation or the weather conditions. Some of us feel the cold, others, like me, get hot very quickly, but for more advice on using layers please check out this video

Care & Advice

How to wash your down products

Having spent years talking to people about down products, whether that’s a jacket, sleeping bag or even a pair of slippers, very few have had the confidence to go ahead and wash the product on their own, especially when they have just spent an arm and a leg on it. This small guide is here to explain that it’s not as daunting and utterly terrifying as it first appears.

Step one: Before you even get near that washing machine, wipe off any excess mud or dirt that may be lingering on the surface of the jacket, as this will clog up the washing machine, eventually rendering it useless.

We recommend the use of Nikwax Down Wash Direct for down products as it’s one hundred percent environmentally friendly and will wash and re-proof the garment without the use of bleach or any other nasty chemicals. What household washing agents can (and often do) is remove the water repellent coating on the fabric of the jacket, whilst also damaging the delicate array of feathers inside.

Step two: We’ll assume in this instance that you’ve been washing other products prior to your down jacket and have used a bleach based detergent. Therefore it’s a good idea to run the washing machine for half an hour or so without anything inside to rinse it clean before adding the Nikwax or putting the jacket in. Also, don’t forget to remove the detergent drawer to give it a wash inside, outside and behind, as detergent can clog up and still enter the washing machine if not cleaned out thoroughly. This ensures that any remnants of detergent are removed and that the Nikwax products will work effectively.

Step three: Set the washing machine to a cold wash (check the garments care label, most tend to be around 30°C) and as delicate as possible. Most washing machines have a “wool” cycle which is ideal.

Step four: If using Nikwax Down Wash Direct, place 100ml in either the tray or directly into the washing machine inside a small pot/ball. If you choose to use another washing product, place the appropriate amount in the machine in the same way.

Step five: Set the washing machine to run on a slow cycle, allowing plenty of time for the jacket to soak up the cleaning/re-proofing product. Most washing machines will have a pre-set time for different washing cycles.

When the cycle has finished be prepared for a shock, your precious bit of kit will come out looking like a soggy ball of material. But don’t worry, you haven’t ruined it, it’s just that all that fluffy down insulation has become water logged and has clumped together. The trick is to now get all that down nice and dry to reinstate its superb insulating properties. Simply hanging it up in a warm place will not work that well. It will take days to properly dry and you will have to constantly break up the clumps to get it thoroughly dry. The best way is to use a tumble dryer; either a domestic one for smaller items or a commercial drier for sleeping bags.

Step six: Pop the garment into the dryer and make sure to select a low heat; a high heat runs the risk of melting seams and fabrics within the garment. It sounds weird, but shove a few tennis balls into the drier with the garment; the tennis balls will bounce around and help to break up the clumps of down. Every 20 minutes, pull the jacket out of the dryer and lie the jacket down on a table. Run your hands over the jacket until you find a 'clump' or ball of down; tease apart this down clump and spread it evenly into the baffle. Once you're confident you've pulled apart every clump to the best of your ability, stick it back in for another 20 minutes. Keep repeating this until there are no more clumps left.

Step seven: When the cycle has finished and you are sure that you have got the garment as dry as possible, hang it up in a warm dry place, an airing cupboard is ideal, for 24 hours. This drives out the last of any dampness and allows the down to loft fully. Take it out and give it a good shake and, hey presto, it’ll be as good as new.

"I first noticed Trekitt by their fantastic YouTube videos, which were very informative and honest. So I headed on over to the website and looked at various coats to try and determine which to go for. Being a bit of a muppet I didn't really have a clue what was best so contacted customer services who directed me to a few coats but said he would go away (over the weekend!) and think some more and get back to me Monday. I thought it was just a fob off as the conversation had been going a while but low and behold on Monday morning an email appears with suggestions! I was so pleasantly surprised that if I hadn't already been convinced to buy with them, it was concreted then. I bought 2 coats from them the same day and very shortly after they appeared. The fit was exactly as they had suggested it would be, the quality of the items was as described and I am very happy with them. In this day and age of large companies taking a backward step from customer service, it is such a breath of fresh air to be treated with such a personal touch. If I ever need anything outdoorsy, I know exactly where I'm going."
