What is the Phoenix Flight?
The Phoenix Flight jacket is an incredibly breathable, flexible, lightweight and versatile insulative layer for moving quickly in mountainous environments. Whether you're climbing, mountaineering, walking or trekking, the Phoenix will find its way into your layering system somehow.
What is it made of?
Insulation: Taking care of the insulation inside the Phoenix is 120g of Primaloft Thermoplume. Don't be ashamed if you haven't heard of it before, we hadn't either! This brand new form of insulation from Primaloft is a jump forward in terms of synthetic insulation. It essentially copies the shape of down but uses synthetic fabrics, meaning it retains almost the same compressibility, feel and loft as down but with the added benefit of performing well in damp conditions. All of this insulation is stored in micro-baffles to allow the jacket to pack down nice and small whilst offering bucket loads of warmth.
Outer fabric: Montane surround this insulation with two fabrics, so lets start with the main one - Featherlite Mini Rip-stop 20D. This tough yet lightweight fabric protects the insulation inside, yet packs down to a fraction of its original size. A durable water repellent coating has been applied to the outer of this fabric to ensure light rain beads off the surface. Please note, you'll still need to pack a shell for when the weather gets really gnarly! The second fabric used is a super stretchy, lightweight and breathable Thermo Stretch Pro fleece. This fleece is used down the sides of the jacket and over the shoulders (where you naturally require less warmth); this allows your heat to escape when you're working hard.
What are the features?
Starting at the top, an insulated hood fits snug to your head and features an elastic brim around your face to seal in the warmth. This hood is designed to fit under a helmet when belaying or climbing. Moving down, you get articulated arms to prevent the dreaded 'hem lift' when reaching above your head, a zipped internal chest pocket for a phone or snacks, two zipped hand pockets, pre-elasticated cuffs and lastly an adjustable hem with a drawcord.
How does it fit?
The Phoenix features a slim, tapered fit with an average length, however due to its stretchy nature it will accomodate a range of shapes and sizes. The stretchy fabric over the rear of the shoulders allows a full range of motion if you're climbing or mountaineering, while the articulation in the arms increases comfort even further.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
This versatile piece can either be used as a warm midlayer with a shell over the top in wet and windy conditions, or it can be used on its own when moving fast in cold, dry conditions.
