What are its features?
As we mentioned above, the GPSMAP 66i features preloaded European TopoActive mapping with an UK overlay using OS GB Pro 1:50k. For expeditions that take you further afield you also have access to Garmin BirdsEye Satellite Imagery which can be downloaded direct-to-device with no subscription necessary to provide you with high resolution photorealistic view of your route so you can pick out key features along the way.
The best part about this device is that it includes inReach satellite communications technology which allows you to send and receive messages, navigate your route, share your journey and, if all goes pear shaped, you can hit the big SOS button on the side and get emergency help from a 24/7 globally monitored centre. All of this is possible thanks to the 100% global Iridium satellite network.
Just like anything this service isn’t free, however it is highly affordable (especially when compared to “paying the ultimate price”) with yearly-subscriptions for the constant explorer, or a more flexible monthly options for shorter expeditions. Like all good quality GPS units, it supports multi-GNSS combined with altimeter, barometer and compass sensors to aid navigation in challenging environments.
Download and pair the 66i with the Garmin Connect mobile app and you can get up-to-date Active Weather overlaid on the screen so you can see your local forecast including, wind, temperature, clouds and precipitation. And finally, use the Garmin Explore mobile app to plan and review routes and sync data on the move.
