What is the Meron HS Hood?
The Meron HS Hood is designed to provide protection in some of the most unforgiving alpine and scottish winter conditions. Made using 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro fabrics and sporting Mammut's outstanding High Reach technology, you'll barely notice you're wearing it until you take it off.
What is it made of?
Starting from the outside, you've got a super tough, abrasion resistant nylon outer fabric with a durable water repellent coating to allow water to bead off the surface. Underneath this, a Gore-Tex Pro membrane provides total waterproofing, windproofing and high amounts of breathability when you're working hard. Gore-Tex Pro, to this day, is still one of the most durable and long lasting membranes available, making it a perfect companion to the Meron. Inside, you've got a thinner, more breathable nylon sitting next to your skin which slides easily over additional layers in cold conditions.
What are the features?
Starting at the top, Mammut equip the Meron with a vertically and horizontally adjustable, helmet-compatible hood with a reinforced brim and large toggles to be used with bulky gloves. The multiple adjustment points allow you to fine-tune the fit depending on whether you're using a helmet or not, what the wind is doing and a number of other factors.
Other features include an Aquaguard front zipper which can be unzipped from the bottom or the top to allow you to wear it over a climbing harness, an internal chest pocket with a zip, two front zipped pockets with waterproof zips which are placed high enough to avoid a climbing harness and at such an angle that your opposing arm can easily unzip the pocket (i.e right arm unzips left pocket), underarm zipped vents to dump heat quickly and a hem drawcord which can be adjusted with one hand — especially useful when handling tools.
How does it fit?
We mentioned Mammut's High Reach Technology earlier — this is essentially Mammut's way of saying the jacket won't rise up during use. Articulation in the shoulders and back allow your arms to move freely without the jacket rising up and exposing your lower back to the elements. The rest of the jacket features Mammut's 'regular' fit, meaning there's enough room underneath for layers, yet not so oversized that it can't be worn when just wearing a baselayer or thin midlayer.
