What is the Infinity Light Jacket?
The Infinity Light is a lightweight, natural goose down insulated and highly weather resistant jacket for active mountain users looking for lightweight warmth with high levels of breathability and protection from all but the worst of the weather.
Rab have used the new Gore-Tex Infinium membrane to protect the down from the elements, and whilst this does not make the Infinity 100% waterproof, it does make it incredibly breathable and to be honest, you’d have to try pretty damn hard to get wet in this jacket.
What is it made of?
Insulation: Let's start with the beating heart of the Infinity Light Jacket, the insulation. Rab have used 190g of 800Fill Power, Hydrophobic, RDS European Goose Down in a narrow box wall construction to maximum performance.
Ok, let’s break that down:
190g – Physical weight of all the natural down inside the Infinity Light jacket.
800Fill Power – Rab grade down according to the size of the clusters, that is the amount of air that the down can trap relative to its weight. They take 1 gram of fully lofted down and record its volume, the resulting number represents the down’s “Fill power”. So, for this jacket, 1 gram of down “lofts” to fill 800 cubic inches; or around 16 litres if you’re familiar with rucksack capacity.
Hydrophobic - Each and every cluster of down has been treated with special Nikwax Hydrophobic stuff to ensure they resist moisture, retain more heat, loft better, and dry much quicker than untreated down. The hydrophobic treatment means that a down jacket will perform better in wet conditions, but it’s not intended to make a garment waterproof.
RDS – Responsible down standard. The responsible down standard is an independent, voluntary global standard that aims to ensure that down is sourced from ducks and geese that have been treated well. This means farming down in environments that allow them to live healthy lives, express innate behaviours and not suffer from fear, pain or distress.
European Goose Down – Just about the best quality down you can get!
Narrow box wall - Box-wall construction uses distinct box-shaped compartments that run horizontally around the body. Because the box-shaped baffles are not pinched at the edges there is space for the down to fully loft throughout the chamber allowing for an even distribution of down and vastly reducing the likelihood of cold spots.
Surrounding all this luxurious insulation is the new Gore-Tex Infinium membrane. This new membrane provides complete wind-proofing, high levels of breathability and excellent weather resistance. Technically this membrane isn't 100% waterproof, but in practice we've found that only prolonged torrential rain will eventually seep through.
On the inside a lightweight, breathable nylon is used which increases next-to-the-skin comfort and on the outside Rab have used a lightweight, ripstop nylon for increased durability and protection. Additional stitch-free overlaid panels on the torso and upper arms, provide extra protection in harsh conditions.
What are the features?
Rab have kept the features to a minimum as the Infinity Light is intended to be, rather obviously, lightweight and minimal for those looking to keep the weight low and the packsize small.
Starting at the top, the Infinity features a down insulated hood with a wired peak and concealed adjusters to seal in the warmth around your face.
Moving down, you've got articulated sleeves for increased comfort when climbing, finished off with low profile elasticated cuffs to get a tight seal over gloves or mittens. The front zip is a two-way YKK Vislon for reliable performance even in freezing conditions. This zip is then backed up with a synthetic insulated baffle to make sure nothing gets through.
Storage wise, you get two YKK zipped hand pockets and an internal zipped security pocket. Down at the bottom of the jacket is a hem drawcord to seal out the weather and keep in the warmth and for extra safety there are reflective logos.
An included stuffsack makes storage easy and the Infinity will easily pack down into your pack when not required.
How does it fit?
The Infinity fits into Rab's 'regular' fit block, however we'd say it sizes up fairly large. This is to allow layers to fit underneath in super cold conditions, but also to allow complete freedom of movement when mountaineering.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
The Infinity is designed to be your outer layer in cold and damp conditions. Thanks to the Gore Infinium membrane, Hydrophobic Down and protective outer fabric, you're unlikey to ever need to wear a shell jacket over the top.
