What is the Greenland No.1 Down jacket?

If we had to choose just one jacket to showcase the highest level of quality and bordering obsessive levels of detail, the Greenland No.1 would be that jacket. The Greenland No.1 sits in Fjallraven's 'numbers collection', a carefully chosen selection of products which feature the least amount of environmental harm, will last a lifetime of use and look brilliant at the same time.

What is it made of?

Insulation: Starting from the inside-out, the Greenland No.1 is insulated with 100g of the highest quality 800 fill-power goose down to keep you warm and toasy when the temperature drops. This down comes from birds that haven't been live plucked and have lived a free-range existence — although it sounds odd, it creates a higher quality insulation and will insulate you more effectively. Fjallraven have continued their theme of obsessive detail to the inside of the jacket too. A downproof Pertex Quantum fabric lines the entire inner of the jacket and prevents down from shuffling its way through. It's also highly breathable and will aid moisture management if you kick up a bit of a sweat.

Outer fabric: Encapsulating all this super high quality down is Fjallraven's own Recycled Polyester and Organic Cotton mix fabric (G-1000 Eco). The great thing about this fabric is that you control how breathable and water resistant the jacket is. If you require more breathability, leave the jacket unwaxed and unproofed; If you're using the No.1 in some foul conditions and need a bit more weather resistance, give the jacket a wax using a hairdryer or an iron and watch the water repel off. Although while waxed the No.1 will be less breathable, it will allow the jacket to be completely windproof and highly water resistant for the worst conditions.

What are the features?

Vegetable tanned leather strips are placed around the cuffs and hood, while a large leather Fjallraven badge sits on the sleeve and sports the classic fox logo. Lastly, two hand pockets and two bellows pockets take items such as a phone, keys or compass.

How does it fit?

The Greenland No.1 features an average length with plenty of room in the shoulders and chest. It isn't a technical piece, therefore you may find that it sits a little looser than some of their more technical products.

Where does it fit in the layering system?

As an everyday/easy walking jacket, it'll suit best as an outer layer in cold, dry conditions.

  • High quality construction
  • 800 fill power down
  • Brass poppers along the chest and zip
  • Leather detailling around the hood, cuffs and arm
  • G-1000 Eco outer fabric
  • Downproof inner fabric
  • Insulated hood
  • Numbers collection styling
Care & Advice

How Should Your Insulated Jacket Fit?

Insulated jackets are pedantic little things. Too tight and you'll compress the insulation and limit the warmth capabilities of your brand new jacket, too loose and you'll spend hours warming up the dead space inside the jacket. Getting the correct fit isn't just about aesthetics, it will determine how warm you are.

The Incorrect Fit

Too loose: A jacket which is too loose will keep you relatively warm, however it will take far longer to do so and will waste large amounts of your precious energy. An insulated jacket works by trapping the natural heat that your body gives off in the fibres of the insulation; this creates a micro-climate inside your jacket, keeping you warm and toasty. If your jacket is too loose, heat will be able to escape through the hem, the sleeves and the neck of the jacket; it's a little like sticking the heating on in your car with the windows cracked open - it will heat up, just incredibly slowly.

Too tight: A jacket which is too tight is arguably worse than one that is too loose. If your jacket is far too tight, the baffles can compress to a point where the insulation can't loft effectively, limiting the amount of warmth it can trap. Essentially, it won't work!

The Correct Fit
It's a tricky one to explain, but it's somewhere in the middle. You've first got to consider how many layers you'll tend to wear underneath; will you have just a t-shirt then the jacket, or possibly a baselayer, midlayer and then the jacket? When you've figured out your layers and you've popped your insulated jacket over the top, you shouldn't have any dead space inside. The cuffs and hem should be comfortably sealed around your waist and wrists with room to move. You should be able to lift an arm up above your head without the hem of the jacket lifting more than an inch or so, and the sleeves should be long enough that when carrying out the same motion, they aren't mid-way up your forearm. Your shoulders and chest area should have enough room so that your hands can touch behind your back without feeling restricted.

Additional Information
Lastly, consider which activites you'll primarily be carrying out while wearing the jacket. Are you primarily using it as a winter climbing piece, or an everyday/dog walking jacket? You'll find that technical climbing jackets tend to feature a shorter cut, while urban and casual jackets feature a longer cut to offer additional warmth with less mobility.

1Chest

Run the tape around the fullest part of your chest, the tape should be just below the arm pit and over the shoulder blades whilst horizontal to the floor.

2Waist

Measure around your natural waist as show in the diagram

3Inseam

Measure your inside leg from crotch to ankle blone keeping your leg straight: not as easy as it sounds, you could take a pair of trousers that you already own, that fit you well, and measure from the crotch to the bottom of the leg.

4Sleeve

This is a bit more tricky! Measure from the top of your spine (at the bottom of your neck) to your elbow and on the your wrist

5Arm

You should place the beginning of the measuring tape behind your shoulder, and feed it out following your arm making sure to pass both the elbow joint and the wrist, as pictured. You should take the measurement at the point where you would like the sleeve to end. This is usually just past your wrist.

"I first noticed Trekitt by their fantastic YouTube videos, which were very informative and honest. So I headed on over to the website and looked at various coats to try and determine which to go for. Being a bit of a muppet I didn't really have a clue what was best so contacted customer services who directed me to a few coats but said he would go away (over the weekend!) and think some more and get back to me Monday. I thought it was just a fob off as the conversation had been going a while but low and behold on Monday morning an email appears with suggestions! I was so pleasantly surprised that if I hadn't already been convinced to buy with them, it was concreted then. I bought 2 coats from them the same day and very shortly after they appeared. The fit was exactly as they had suggested it would be, the quality of the items was as described and I am very happy with them. In this day and age of large companies taking a backward step from customer service, it is such a breath of fresh air to be treated with such a personal touch. If I ever need anything outdoorsy, I know exactly where I'm going."
