What is the Latok GTX?
The Latok is Rab's toughest, most protective hardshell in their range, designed for alpine climbing, winter mountaineering and everything in between. If you're in the mountains and require reliable protection from the elements without feeling like you're wearing a reinforced tarpaulin, the Latok should be at the top of your list.
What is it made of?
Membrane(s): The Latok features a Gore-Tex Pro membrane, but in two variants. You get Gore-Tex Pro Most Breathable throughout the body and Gore-Tex Pro Most Rugged over the shoulders and hood. This makes it more breathable in areas which require it and more durable in areas prone to abuse. Clever, right?
Outer fabric: A mountain-inspired hardshell is only as good as its outer fabric. Rab use an ultra-tough 70D nylon throughout the entire jacket to provide protection and added weather-resistance. This fabric is fully recycled, so not only are you getting a high-performance jacket, but one which is responsibly sourced.
What are the features?
Starting at the top, you get a 3-way adjustable, helmet-compatible hood which can be rolled away when not in use and features a laminated peak to keep water off your face. Rab have always made brilliant hoods, and this one is no exception; the hood tightens snugly yet comfortably around your head and prevents the hood from blowing off in strong winds. Cleverly, when just the lower drawcord on the hood is tightened, it tucks in the other drawcords so they don't slap you in the face when it gets windy. Other features include a fleece-lined chin guard and back of the neck, two zipped chest pockets, two zipped hand pockets, zipped vents under each arm to dump heat quickly and effectively, an internal mesh security pocket, an internal mesh storage pocket, cuffs which feature excess fabric on the top of the sleeve to protect the top of your hands, elasticated hem and waist drawcords to seal out the elements and lastly some reflective badges on the chest and rear. As you may have already figured out, this jacket is packed with toys!
How does it fit?
It fits into Rab's 'regular' fit block, meaning it's neither wetsuit-tight nor Hawaiian shirt loose. It has enough room underneath to fit additional layers during winter, yet it can be tightened using the supplied drawcords and cinches to allow it to fit with just a baselayer underneath. The sleeves are nice and long so they're not halfway up your arm while climbing.
