I’ve been wanting to get my hands on the Montane Dura XT Fleece ever since it came out at the beginning of the season. So, when I finally got the chance to test it, I was pretty excited. I’m a climber, and I’m always on the lookout for kit that works just as well at the crag as it does for everything else I get up to outdoors. I particularly like pieces that aren’t limited to one activity, and the Dura XT looked like it could tick quite a few boxes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, I’ve been injured recently, which means I’ve been spending considerably more time belaying and hanging around at the crag than actually climbing. Not exactly how I’d planned to spend my time, but it’s given me a good opportunity to see how the fleece performs when I’m not constantly moving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve also been wearing it out and about and lounging around my campervan. After spending some time with it, I think it’s safe to say I’ve found my new favourite fleece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first thing I noticed about the Dura XT was how lovely the fabric felt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montane uses THERMO HLG fabric in the Dura XT. It combines a high-loft grid fleece interior with a stretchy double-weave outer. The inside feels soft and cosy, while the outer has a more substantial, protective feel than a traditional fluffy fleece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n
I really like this combination. I love a cosy fleece, but I don’t necessarily want something that feels delicate or that I’m constantly worrying about catching on rough surfaces. The Dura XT feels like a good middle ground between a comfortable everyday layer and something designed for proper mountain use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overall design is pretty straightforward, too. You’ve got a fitted hood, zipped hand pockets, a zipped chest pocket and a full-length front zip, without loads of unnecessary extras. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having wanted this fleece for so long, I was hoping it would live up to my expectations. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where I’ve Used It<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
As I mentioned, my climbing days have looked a little different recently. Rather than spending most of my time on the rock, I’ve been doing plenty of belaying and sitting around at the crag. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who climbs will know how quickly you can get cold standing around between routes. It’s even worse when there’s a bit of wind or you’re belaying someone who’s taking their time. Having a comfortable, warm layer to throw on makes a big difference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dura XT has been a great companion for these slower days. It’s comfortable enough to wear for extended periods, and I like that it doesn’t feel overly bulky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it’s designed with climbing and mountaineering in mind, I’ve never been someone who reserves a piece of kit for one particular activity. I’ve mainly been wearing mine at the crag, but it’s also become a regular choice for getting out and about and relaxing around the van. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s probably what I like most about it. It’s technical enough for the activities I enjoy, but comfortable enough that I want to wear it the rest of the time, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dura XT’s high-loft grid fleece interior helps trap warm air close to the body. This provides insulation without the bulk of a traditional thick fleece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve really appreciated having that extra warmth while belaying. When you’re not moving around much, it’s easy to start feeling chilly, and having a cosy layer makes those quieter moments considerably more comfortable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I particularly like is that it doesn’t feel excessively bulky, which makes it practical for wearing underneath other layers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, it isn’t a replacement for a proper insulated jacket in genuinely cold conditions. There will still be days when I’d want to throw something warmer over the top, particularly during long winter belays. However, for cooler days and general outdoor use, I’ve been really pleased with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfort & Fit<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Comfort is probably one of the biggest reasons I’ve fallen for the Dura XT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inside has that lovely soft, lofted feel that makes you want to keep wearing it. It actually reminds me of the Montane Caldus XT, which feels similarly cosy against the skin. However, I use the two quite differently. The Caldus XT is very much my lounging-around-the-van fleece, whereas the Dura XT is something I’ll happily wear out and about, during activities and back at the van afterwards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stretchy double-weave outer gives it a more structured feel than a traditional fleece without making it feel restrictive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I particularly appreciate the stretch. Freedom of movement is something I always look for in technical clothing, especially for climbing. I don’t want a fleece that feels restrictive when reaching overhead or moving my arms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I haven’t been able to test it properly on the rock yet, I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs once I’m back climbing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breathability & Temperature Regulation<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n
One of the reasons I wanted the Dura XT was its potential to work across different activities. Montane’s THERMO HLG fabric balances warmth and breathability. Its grid construction also helps manage heat and moisture. For me, the appeal is having a fleece that’s comfortable enough for quieter moments but doesn’t immediately feel like too much when you start moving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The full-length zip is useful for adjusting ventilation, particularly when switching between activity and rest. I haven’t been able to give it a proper test during sustained, high-output climbing yet, so I wouldn’t want to make any big claims about its breathability under those conditions. That’s something I’ll be paying attention to when I’m back on the rock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Durability & Build Quality<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n
One thing that sets the Dura XT apart from more traditional fleeces is its outer fabric. The stretchy double-weave construction gives it a more robust feel, which I really appreciate in clothing I’m planning to wear regularly outdoors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a climber, I’m used to kit coming into contact with rough surfaces, whether that’s rock, rucksack straps or just the general wear and tear of spending time at the crag. Montane has also reinforced the pocket areas to help improve abrasion resistance in places that see regular use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n
It’s still too early to comment on long-term durability, but I like having a fleece that feels suited to more than just occasional casual wear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather Resistance<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n
The Dura XT has a water-repellent finish, providing some resistance to light moisture. That’s a useful feature for UK outdoor conditions, where you can head out in perfectly decent weather and find yourself dealing with drizzle half an hour later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it isn’t waterproof, and I wouldn’t rely on it as my only layer in persistent rain. The double-weave outer also provides a more protective surface than an exposed fluffy fleece, although it isn’t completely windproof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, that’s absolutely fine. I’d happily wear it on its own in suitable conditions or layer a waterproof or insulated jacket over the top when needed.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practical Features & Ease of Use<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n
I like that Montane hasn’t overcomplicated the Dura XT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fitted hood is designed to sit underneath a climbing helmet. That’s a useful feature for anyone planning to wear it on technical routes. Although I haven’t been able to test that properly yet, it’s something I’ll appreciate when I’m back climbing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montane has positioned the zipped hand pockets with harnesses and rucksack hip belts in mind. There’s also a zipped chest pocket for keeping smaller essentials close to hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s also an adjustable hem, which is useful for getting a closer fit and reducing draughts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I particularly like having a full-length zip on a fleece like this. It’s easy to throw on when you’re getting cold at the crag, and just as easy to open up when you start moving again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing about the design feels unnecessarily complicated, which is exactly what I want from a piece of kit I’m going to wear regularly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best For…<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
I think the Montane Dura XT is a great option for anyone who wants a warm, comfortable fleece that isn’t limited to one particular activity. Montane has designed it with climbing and mountaineering in mind. Features such as the under-helmet hood, stretch construction and harness-compatible pockets reflect that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n
However, I certainly wouldn’t limit it to climbing. If you’re someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, whether that’s hiking, scrambling, camping, travelling or simply spending time at the crag, I think there’s a lot to like about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, if you’re looking for an extremely lightweight fleece for strenuous activities in warmer conditions, the Dura XT may provide more insulation than you need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
