You get in\/on them, lie down and go to sleep. The variables to which you\u2019re subjected to are minimal and simply include how much wind is passing through your tent flysheet, how much you\u2019ve eaten and how much you weigh. A manufacture can\u2019t assume these variables, so they give you a minimum and maximum temperature rating. Jacket, on the other hand, are subjected to a huge number of variables, including windspeed, moisture (is it hammering down or not), your weight, how well the jacket fits you, whether you&#8217;ve correctly adjusted your drawcords\/ cuffs\/ hood and, most importantly, what you&#8217;re actually doing in the thing.<br><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/tkt\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2022\/12\/try-this-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Don\u2019t Jackets Have Temperature Ratings?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypothetically, let\u2019s say a manufacturer gives their jacket a rating of -10\u00b0C. They assume you\u2019re well-fed, a healthy weight, windspeed is low and it\u2019s not chucking it down. You pop your insulated jacket on and begin your leisurely dog walk. Within 10 minutes, you\u2019re freezing cold. Why is this? The jacket is rated to -10\u00b0C and it\u2019s -2\u00b0C, I should be warm? Well, the manufacturer made that jacket for mountaineering, and as such it\u2019s rated to -10\u00b0C whilst climbing a gnarly rock face in the alps. Because you\u2019re only walking your Labrador across a few moderately frosty fields, you\u2019re not kicking out enough heat to keep yourself warm.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sleeping bags vs Jackets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I can hear what you\u2019re saying\u2014\u201cWhy don\u2019t they use a temperature range like in sleeping bags?\u201d. Jackets are incredibly versatile, and many are made for hardcore mountaineering as well as everyday use. It&#8217;s stupidly warm down jacket that can use in some pretty hostile conditions in the depths of a Scottish winter, yet it can also be worn day to day when you&#8217;re plodding around Sainsbury&#8217;s. At 5\u00b0C&nbsp; you&#8221;d be more than warm enough during your urban excursions. At -10\u00b0C you&#8217;d be warm enough mountaineering. Quite obviously, that&#8217;s a big temperature difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Manufacturers Be Held Responsible for User Error?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So, this begs the question, would a temperature rating actually be useful in this situation, or would Mountain Equipment end up with a court case on their hands because they\u2019ve assured you their jacket is fine to -10\u00b0C, but you got hypothermia at that temperature because you weren\u2019t exerting yourself enough? Or because it suddenly starting chucking it down and their ratings assumed dry, still conditions? Or because silly-old Brian didn\u2019t have his hem drawcord done up and a load of heat escaped?<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/tkt\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2022\/12\/sner-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you choose the right insulated jacket then?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Really, you need to familiarise yourself with the below terms.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For down jackets: <\/strong><em>Fill power &amp; fill weight&nbsp;<\/em><br><strong>For synthetic jackets: <\/strong><em>g\/sqm OR fill weight&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Down Jacket<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fill power relates to the quality of the down.<br>The higher the number, the warmer it\u2019ll be for its weight. So, 160g fill weight = 160g of down in the jacket. Simple.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Synthetic Jacket<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of synthetic jackets, many use \u2018sheet\u2019 insulation which needs to be measured in grams per square metre. The higher the number, the heavier (and consequently warmer) the jacket will be. In other cases, they use \u2018blown\u2019 insulation, which is like down but constructed from manmade fibres. This is measured in fill&nbsp;weight\u2014the same as down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use these two terms to assess approximately how warm your chosen jacket is. You can look at a jacket with 50g of down and you&#8217;ll know it&#8217;s on the lower-end of the warmth spectrum, whereas something with 300g will be a fortress.
