What is the Sigma SL Anorak?
The Sigma SL is a brilliantly versatile, super tough and weather resistant softshell for changeable mountainous conditions. It excells when used for winter climbing, scrambling and general mountain use thanks to its incredibly breathable yet durable outer fabric.
What is it made of?
The Sigma is made from Arc'teryx's own Aequora AirPerm fabric throughout. Made from 86% nylon and 14% elastane, it offers incredible durability yet doesn't restrict your movement thanks to the elastane content. Despite its durability, it offers high amounts of breathability by allowing a little wind to pass through, contantly circulating air inside the jacket to prevent you overheating. Next to skin, it feels just like your traditional softshell — soft and comfortable, however the exterior feels reassuringly tougher and more abrasion resistant. A durable water repellent coating has been added to the outer of the fabric to resist light rain and snow if you happen to get caught out.
What are the features?
As you will have noticed, the Sigma SL is an Anorak rather than a full zip — this increases the overall durability and stretchiness of the jacket yet still allows you to ventilate with the 1/2 length front zip. An adjustable, helmet compatible hood provides extra protection when wearing a helmet, yet can be adjusted to fit your head without a helmet with drawcords. If you're not a fan of hoods or want to stick a layer over the top of the Sigma, the hood can be rolled away. A small zipped chest pocket stores essentials, while hem drawcords seal in warmth around your waist. Lastly, Arc'teryx's HemLock system places a thin tube of foam in the hem of the jacket to essentially 'lock' the jacket underneath a climbing harness, preventing your back becoming exposed to the cold; this can be removed.
How does it fit?
The Sigma features a trim, fairly short length which will suit those under 6ft best; for reference, the centre back length is 73cm. A slight dropped hem at the rear provides additional coverage. There's plenty of room in the shoulders and back to allow you to climb without feeling restricted.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
The Sigma is designed to be used primarily as a tough, protective outer layer during strenous activity. That being said, a belay jacket can easily be worn over the top to provide additional warmth when stationary.
