Arcteryx Womens Atom AR Hoody Black

What is the Atom AR Hoody?

The Atom AR is the most versatile winter jacket you'll ever own. It features a tough, low-maintenance Coreloft insulation and a weather-resistant Tyono outer fabric, making it ideal for climbing, trekking, mountaineering or even just wearing on your commute to work.

What is the Atom AR made of?

Fabric: The Tyono face fabric is a 30 denier nylon which has been treated with a Durable Water Repellant (DWR) finish for greater weather protection. The tight weave of the Tyono face fabric allows for very little air permeation which plays a very important role. This minuscule amount of air will go un-noticed but will slowly replenish the warm air that's already trapped inside the insulation and will help to keep you at a comfortable temperature.

If that wasn't enough, Arc'teryx have used a super-breathable Permeair 20D fabric under the arms. This allows greater airflow to an area which doesn't require as much warmth and does require higher levels of breathability. A simple touch, but one that makes it suitable as a midlayer as well as an outer layer.

Insulation: Arc'teryx have actually used 3 different weights of Coreloft in the construction of this jacket; the main body uses 120g/m², under the arms have 80g/m² and the hood is insulated with 60g/m². This zoned insulation means you have plenty of warmth around your vital organs (where you'll require more warmth and protection) and less around the arms and hood where you require more flexibility and less warmth.

What are the features?

The Atom AR features two hand pockets and an internal security pocket, all of which are zipped. The StormHood is fully adjustable, helmet-compatible and sits snug to your head, even in strong winds. A stiffened peak on the hood keeps light rain and snow off your face. To seal out the cold, the Atom AR features a hem drawcord and low-profile Jersey knit cuffs that are so soft and so smooth you'll barely notice they're there. They sit snugly underneath gloves or mitts, yet offer stretchiness if you need to pull the sleeves up to ventilate. The last thing you want when you're halfway up a climb is to have the zip come undone; Arc'teryx have engineered 'braking bumps' in the zip to prevent just that.

How does the Atom AR fit?

As an insulating piece, it’s designed to fit pretty closely to maximise the Coreloft insulation. The last thing you want is a big baggy jacket as you’ll waste energy warming up all that dead air space, and conversely, you don’t want it too tight either as that’ll hinder insulation's ability to trap warmth. With the Arcteryx regular fit, there’s enough room underneath for lightweight layers yet it still fits closely to ensure maximum performance.

The arms are nice and long and don’t restrict your movement if you have to reach when climbing or scrambling. If you've tried an Atom from pre-2020, you'll find this one fits a little smaller.

Where does the Atom AR fit in the layering system?

Thanks to the super-breathable side panels and excellent fit, the Atom works as a toasty midlayer under a shell just as well as a protective outer layer in milder conditions. The beauty of this jacket is that even if it does get soaking wet, it'll still provide warmth.

  • Water and wind-resistant outer fabric
  • Breathable side panels
  • Coreloft insulation is zoned
  • Compressible and packable
  • DWR finish (Durable Water Repellent) helps repel water from fabric surface
  • Articulated elbows
  • Gusseted underarms
  • Helmet-compatible StormHood
  • Insulated hood
  • Stretch-knit cuffs for seamless layering
  • Adjustable hem drawcord
  • Drop back hem
  • Internal chest pocket
  • Two hand pockets with zippers
  • No Slip Zip

How Should Your Insulated Jacket Fit?

Insulated jackets are pedantic little things. Too tight and you'll compress the insulation and limit the warmth capabilities of your brand new jacket, too loose and you'll spend hours warming up the dead space inside the jacket. Getting the correct fit isn't just about aesthetics, it will determine how warm you are.

The Incorrect Fit

Too loose: A jacket which is too loose will keep you relatively warm, however it will take far longer to do so and will waste large amounts of your precious energy. An insulated jacket works by trapping the natural heat that your body gives off in the fibres of the insulation; this creates a micro-climate inside your jacket, keeping you warm and toasty. If your jacket is too loose, heat will be able to escape through the hem, the sleeves and the neck of the jacket; it's a little like sticking the heating on in your car with the windows cracked open - it will heat up, just incredibly slowly.

Too tight: A jacket which is too tight is arguably worse than one that is too loose. If your jacket is far too tight, the baffles can compress to a point where the insulation can't loft effectively, limiting the amount of warmth it can trap. Essentially, it won't work!

The Correct Fit
It's a tricky one to explain, but it's somewhere in the middle. You've first got to consider how many layers you'll tend to wear underneath; will you have just a t-shirt then the jacket, or possibly a baselayer, midlayer and then the jacket? When you've figured out your layers and you've popped your insulated jacket over the top, you shouldn't have any dead space inside. The cuffs and hem should be comfortably sealed around your waist and wrists with room to move. You should be able to lift an arm up above your head without the hem of the jacket lifting more than an inch or so, and the sleeves should be long enough that when carrying out the same motion, they aren't mid-way up your forearm. Your shoulders and chest area should have enough room so that your hands can touch behind your back without feeling restricted.

Additional Information
Lastly, consider which activites you'll primarily be carrying out while wearing the jacket. Are you primarily using it as a winter climbing piece, or an everyday/dog walking jacket? You'll find that technical climbing jackets tend to feature a shorter cut, while urban and casual jackets feature a longer cut to offer additional warmth with less mobility.
