What is the Yupik Parka?

The Yupik Parka is the perfect jacket for everyday or urban winter use, especially here in the UK considering the rainfall. A whole multitude of pockets and a detachable hood further increases it's versatility.

What is it made of?

Using an environmentally friendly fluorocarbon free Hydratic membrane, Fjallraven have provided a water and windproof barrier against the elements while still maintaining a casual look and a nice to the touch feel. On top of being extremely resistant to moisture and wind, the Yupik is insulated with Supreme Microloft, a synthetic insulation which will still maintain its warmth even when wet.

What are the features?

A whole multitude of pockets are included, with two large zipped chest pockets, two smaller chest pockets with press button closures, two top loading bellows pockets and two fleeced lined hand warmer pockets, plus a media pocket on the sleeve.  Inside is equipped with with a drawcord adjustment for the hem, two large stretch mesh storage pockets, two media pockets with fox holes and cord holders, 2 additional inside safety pockets and one napoleon pocket.  Increasing the versatility even further is a detachable two way adjustable storm hood with a removable synthetic fur edging. To top it off, the hood and collar are both fleece lined and a windshield is inluced to keep the cold off your neck and to trap as much heat in as possible.

How does it fit?

It's big, long and cosy, as a Parka should be! It'll easily go over additional layers and provides tonnes of warmth down to your thighs.

  • Wind and waterproof
  • Large selection of pockets
  • Detachable hood, fleece lined
  • Insulated with Supreme Microloft
  • Synthetic fur lined hood
  • Fleece lined hood

Care and maintenance

To keep your outdoor clothing and equipment in tip top condition and performing to its maximum we recommend the use of Nikwax products. We have been using Nikwax products since day one (26th March 1986) and have found them to be totally reliable, dependable and effective. Today’s Nikwax treatments contain environmentally friendly elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to fabric fibres, leaving the spaces between open and breathable. These stretchy polymers are able to stretch and move with the fabric so they stay put for longer and work better.

Nikwax treatments will not change the look or feel of the fabric and they are all water based, environmentally safe, non-flammable and contain no nasty Fluorocarbons. Nikwax products can be used to clean, re-proof and revitalise all your outdoor technical clothing and equipment.

Waterproof breathable clothing has a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish applied to the face fabric during the manufacturing process. The DWR forces water to bead up and roll off the surface therefore preventing the fabric from absorbing moisture. If the outside of your jacket is soaked in a layer of cold water, the warm damp air within can’t escape and will condense on the inside. This makes the jacket feel cold clammy and can make you think that it’s leaking. The DWR finish is not permanent and needs to be maintained and revitalised to optimise performance.

This three layer waterproof jacket should be cleaned regularly with Nikwax Tech Wash; I wash my jacket about once a month, or more often if it gets really filthy. Regular washing with Tech Wash will maintain the DWR for longer and remove salts and oils that can contaminate the fabric, and it will keep your lovely jacket clean and smelling fresh. Washing can be done in a machine according to the manufacturers care guidelines (on the internal label). First clean out any detergent and conditioner residue from the machine dispenser and then add the required amount of Tech Wash and away you go. Hand washing is also suitable but be sure to rinse the garment well.

When you notice that rain/water is no longer beading up and rolling off it’s time to re-proof. Nikwax TX Direct will re-instate a long lasting DWR to completely rejuvenate your jacket. Re-proofing can also be done in the machine once a garment has been washed. Just add the TX-Direct and use the same programme you used for washing. You can also use the spray-on product on a damp garment that has just been washed.

You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari and never have it serviced, so make sure you regularly wash and re-proof your quality kit.

  • Fjallraven Mens Yupik Parka Mountain Grey Review by Stuart,  On 02/01/2017 16:24:31

I bought this to replace an old North Face parka. It was warm, reasonably water resistant but had a useless hood. I bought the Yupik having read a bit online and found it on Trekitt for a really good price. The jacket itself is well put together (made in China if you were expecting it to be made in Scandinavia) but the insulation is thin. There are some strange design features too. Why only half line hand warming pockets? The inside media pockets are tiny and the outer pockets arent that well secured so dont expect them to keep things that dry. All in all its not worth the price and I would have returned it if the dog hadnt drooled on it 5 minutes after taking it out the bag.

Great looking coat that fits beautifully and is incredibly warm. Plenty of pockets and having spent an hour out in rain can vouch for its waterproofing. Really pleased with this purchase.

Great looking coat, really warm and so far waterproof. It has a quality feel to it. Im not sure I need all the pockets but they are handy to have. In cold and wind I really feel comfortable in this coat. Sizing is slightly on the large side. Ordered a Large initially as I am normally just on the larger side of the M/L fence but swapped for a medium which was perfect, with a comfortable fit even with a fleece underneath. (Trekitt returns was simple and efficient)

A fine looking parka with a quality feel, really warm but havent had an opportunity to test its waterproof performance yet. Plenty of pockets and a nice roomy, adjustable hood. Sizing is on the large side - I am usually somewhere between M & L and would usually order a large , but after a call to Trekitt I took their advice and ordered an M. They are very helpful and talking to them is well worth it. Overall, very pleased with my purchase and would buy again.

Phoned the guys at Trekkit as I was unsure on sizing, they gave great advice and I settled on a Medium. Im 5.9" - 13st 41chest 33waist and normally find sleeves too large as I wear a large in other brands. The advice given was spot on and the jacket itself fits perfectly and is bombproof! Heavier than my usual down jackets obviously and accordingly took a couple of outings to get used to the feel. Now it is my go to for standing on the sidelines, nipping to the pub on a cold day (especially the last couple of weeks) and general dawdles to the shops in cold weather. Seems to regulate temperature pretty well, but can be a bit warm if walking hard and temperature warms up - but I guess it isnt designed for me rushing for the train. Agree media pockets too small for most phones, but Im a grown up, so dont use them. This is the first coat Ive had where the hood really feels comfortable and is a godsend in cold weather, having it down and keeping my neck warm as well as giving great freedom but cold protection when up. Thanks guys for the help!

  • Do I need to size down?
Question asked by ludovic on Aug 31 2021 10:23AM
    Hi Ludovic,
We this jacket is generally oversized to fit large bulky layers underneath. So if you aren't wearing big bulky layers underneath, you should be okay with a small but we can't guarantee it will be right.
    All the best,
  • My current Fjallraven jackets are size medium but I've read that this jacket is very roomy. Would you suggest size medium or small?
Question asked by David on Feb 19 2021 12:20PM
The Yupik jacket is indeed "very roomy", so if you were only wearing light layers underneath the small would be fine.
  • Hi, I am 5'8", with 43" chest and am large in the shoulders and arms. What size jacket would you recommend? What is the fit round the arms, and how long is the jacket? I want it to be roomy enough for a base and mid layer. Thanks
Question asked by Colin on Nov 21 2016 3:17PM
Hi Colin, Personally I am 6ft 3 and have a 42inch chest, I tried the Yupik Jacket on this morning in a Medium and there was plenty of room for myself to fit a base-layer and mid-layer underneath. This jacket felt generally roomy and over-sized around the arms and fell just below my hip line. I would say you would be fine with a Medium but if you aren't satisfied with the fit then please send it back using our free UK returns postage. I hope this helped, Will
  • What is the sizing like on these? (I'm confused by the manufacturers size info). I'm 6 feet tall, with a 44 inch chest and usually wear size large. Will large in this parka be ok? Many thanks, Glen
Question asked by Glen on Oct 27 2016 4:10PM
Hey Glen, I myself am 6ft 3 with a 43 inch chest, I have just tried on the large and I still found it roomy. So the large will be a good option for you. Kind regards Will
