What is the Saltoro?

The Saltoro Jacket from Mountain Equipment is a lightweight, protective waterproof shell that combines two different Gore-Tex constructions to give you the optimum jacket for trekking and backpacking in the mountains. It is loaded with all the features you'd expect from a mountain jacket, yet is light and packable enough to be stashed in your rucksack all day just in case the weather changes.

What is the Saltoro made of?

It's incredible weight andpack size is predominantly down to the use of Gore-tex Paclite. Paclite is incredibly comfortable, soft to the touch and doesn't stick to your skin when you get wet - I can confirm this, I tested it out in person. It's a 2.5 layer construction that not only offers great breathability but also the reliable durability of Gore-Tex in torrential downpours. The jacket also features 3-layer 75D Gore-tex reinforcements in the shoulders, the top of the arms and the waist for extra durability when carrying a pack or using a harness.

What are the features?

Starting from the topthe Saltoro features a helmet compatible and fully adjustable Mountain hood that can be synched down to sit snug to your head when you're not wearing a helmet. Storage wise, the jacket has two generous hand pockets in the front that both have YKK water-resistant zippers. To seal out the elements the jacket features adjustable laminated cuffs, dual tether hem drawcords (that doesn't catchon crampons or ice axes) and a YKK moulded centre front zip with an internal flap. If you need to dump excess heat you can do so via the large pit zips - these also featureYKK water-resistant zippers to help seal out the elements when they are done up.

How does the Saltoro fit?

The Saltoro fits into Mountain Equipments ' Women's Alpine Fit' block which is designed to be close fitting but still able to accommodate a few layers on underneath.

Where does the Saltoro fit in the layering system?

The Saltoro is primarily designed as an outer shell, more commonly referred to as a hard shell; which means it works well to protect you from strong winds on cold days, right up to torrential downpours.

Summary

The Saltoro is the ideal minimalist shell that is comfortable enough to wear all day when the weather is at its worst but is also packable enough to keep in your pack all day when you're not sure what the weather is going to do.
