What is the Kinetic Alpine?
The Kinetic Alpine is a very unique creature; it takes the softness, stretchiness and breathability of a softshell, and the waterproof capabilities of a hardshell to create a jacket half way between the two. It's perfect for use in the same situations as you'd normally use a softshell, but where the weather may be a little more changeable.
What is the Kinetic Alpine made from?
The Kinetic uses Rab's own Proflex fabric. This fabric is stretchy, breathable, lightweight and completely waterproof; this makes it ideal for a wide range of mountain activities thanks to its incredible comfort and weather protection. Despite its waterproof capabilities, this outer fabric feels more like a traditional softshell and is exceptionally comfortable next to skin. Rab have cleverly increased the durability of this fabric by using a Ceramic Print on high wear areas such as the shoulders, arms and hood. Rather than using the traditional method of overlaying tough pieces of fabric over the top, Rab use a print which increases durability by 20% yet barely impacts breathability. Inside the jacket, a soft knitted fabric sits next to skin and actively wicks away sweat when you're working hard.
What are the Kinetic's features?
Starting up top, Rab give the Kinetic a helmet compatible hood with a stiffened peak to keep the worst of the rain off your face. Lower down, you get two A-line pockets which are placed to avoid a harness or rucksack hipbelt, while an internal zipped security pocket stores valuables such as a wallet or phone. On the lower of the jacket, Rab give you two concealed hem adjusters to seal out the weather. This area, along with the cuffs, is stitch-free to avoid chafing and to increase comfort.
How does the Kinetic Alpine fit?
Featuring a longer fit than its brother the Kinetic Plus, the Alpine is slim, long yet unrestrictive thanks to that brilliant outer fabric. It features more than enough room to move inside while climbing, walking or generally while in the mountains, and if the temperature drops, has enough room to fit a lightweight fleece underneath without impeding movement.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
The Kinetic Alpine is designed to be worn in the same instances as a softshell, therefore it works best as an outer layer, however it can also be over-layered when static (i.e, slip an insulated jacket over the top when having lunch to stay nice and toasty).
Summary
Although this isn't designed to replace a hardshell in extreme conditions, it does provide greater weather protection when you need the performance of a softshell with the waterproof capabilities of a hardshell. It's exceptionally stretchy, comfortable and breathable, making it one of the most versatile jackets in your kit cupboard.
