What is the Kinetic Plus?

The Kinetic Plus is a very unique creature; it takes the softness, stretchiness and breathability of a softshell, and the waterproof capabilities of a hardshell to create a jacket half way between the two. It's perfect for use in the same situations as you'd normally use a softshell, but where the weather may be a little more changeable.

What is the Kinetic Plus made from?

The Kinetic Plus jacket features Rab's latest development in fabric technology; Proflex. This fantastic component offers an innovative breakthrough in weather protection and flexibility so you can keep moving during changeable and unpredictable weather. This a great example of a highly protective waterproof softshell that combines unimpeded mobility and flex with exceptional softness and user comfort for full on adventures in changeable and challenging conditions.

The secret to its performance is the built in fully flexible waterproof structure that has been laminated between a high gauge knitted softshell outer fabric and a high wicking inner fabric. Whilst the membrane is technically waterproof with taped seams, the Kinetic Plus jacket is not designed to replace a true hardshell jacket in extreme conditions. Profelx has a hydrostatic head of 10,000mm with superb breathability and windproofing, thus, you get a jacket that will remain comfortable even under strenuous activity and keep out a lot more weather than your standard softshell jacket, and it will do all of this whilst weighing next to nothing.

What are the features?

Featuring a close fitting, stretch on hood that dispenses with adjustable drawcords and has the bonus of a laminated and stiffened peak to provide extra facial protection. Twin A line pockets and the main zip use YKK Aquaguard zips to make them as watertight as possible and the cuffs and hem are made stitch free for improved comfort. 

How does it fit?

Featuring a relatively long body and slim cut overall, the Kinetic will feel slimmer than your standard hardshell but roughly the same as your standard Rab softshell. The arms are a good length and provided you choose the correct size, there's enough room underneath for a baselayer and midweight midlayer. 

Where does it fit in the layering system?

The Kinetic Plus is designed to be worn in the same instances as a softshell, therefore it works best as an outer layer, however it can also be over-layered when static (i.e, slip an insulated jacket over the top when having lunch to stay nice and toasty). 

Summary

Although this isn't designed to replace a hardshell in extreme conditions, it does provide greater weather protection when you need the performance of a softshell with the waterproof capabilities of a hardshell. It's exceptionally stretchy, comfortable and breathable, making it one of the most versatile jackets in your kit cupboard.

Care and maintenance

To keep your outdoor clothing and equipment in tip top condition and performing to its maximum we recommend the use of Nikwax products. We have been using Nikwax products since day one (26th March 1986) and have found them to be totally reliable, dependable and effective. Today’s Nikwax treatments contain environmentally friendly elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to fabric fibres, leaving the spaces between open and breathable. These stretchy polymers are able to stretch and move with the fabric so they stay put for longer and work better.

Nikwax treatments will not change the look or feel of the fabric and they are all water based, environmentally safe, non-flammable and contain no nasty Fluorocarbons. Nikwax products can be used to clean, re-proof and revitalise all your outdoor technical clothing and equipment.

Waterproof breathable clothing has a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish applied to the face fabric during the manufacturing process. The DWR forces water to bead up and roll off the surface therefore preventing the fabric from absorbing moisture. If the outside of your jacket is soaked in a layer of cold water, the warm damp air within can’t escape and will condense on the inside. This makes the jacket feel cold clammy and can make you think that it’s leaking. The DWR finish is not permanent and needs to be maintained and revitalised to optimise performance.

This three layer waterproof jacket should be cleaned regularly with Nikwax Tech Wash; I wash my jacket about once a month, or more often if it gets really filthy. Regular washing with Tech Wash will maintain the DWR for longer and remove salts and oils that can contaminate the fabric, and it will keep your lovely jacket clean and smelling fresh. Washing can be done in a machine according to the manufacturers care guidelines (on the internal label). First clean out any detergent and conditioner residue from the machine dispenser and then add the required amount of Tech Wash and away you go. Hand washing is also suitable but be sure to rinse the garment well.

When you notice that rain/water is no longer beading up and rolling off it’s time to re-proof. Nikwax TX Direct will re-instate a long lasting DWR to completely rejuvenate your jacket. Re-proofing can also be done in the machine once a garment has been washed. Just add the TX-Direct and use the same programme you used for washing. You can also use the spray-on product on a damp garment that has just been washed.

You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari and never have it serviced, so make sure you regularly wash and re-proof your quality kit.

Professional Opinion

This Jacket really blurs the line between waterproof and softshell.
However, in our experience, this jacket should be treated more as a softshell with extra weather protection, than as a really breathable waterproof. Great in the Summer and into the shoulders of the year, but you really can't beat a traditional hardshell for the best of British weather.
