What is the Latok GTX?
The more observant amongst you may already notice a slight difference in the name... GTX! This latest generation of the legendary Latok jacket has had an overhaul starting from the inside out. If you're unfamiliar with this stunning jacket, it's Rab's most durable, protective hardshell in the range.
What is it made of?
Outer: Starting with the outer, the Latok uses an ultra tough 70D nylon throughout. This tough outer fabric is equipped to deal with the worst that alpine climbing or Scottish winter mountaineering can throw at it, ensuring you stay dry and protected during less favourable conditions.
Membrane: Underneath this is where the main difference lies. Past versions of the Latok used eVent, however this year Rab have opted for a Gore-Tex Pro membrane, the most durable and one of the most breathable in their range. Gore-Tex Pro is fully waterproof and windproof, yet allows sweat to escape via tiny holes in the membrane which are bigger than water vapour but smaller than water droplets. Along with its superior protection, it's also more breathable than standard Gore-Tex (hence the 'Pro' bit) and tends to last longer.
What are the features?
Starting at the top, you get a 3-way adjustable, helmet compatible hood which can be rolled away when not in use and features a laminated peak to keep water off your face. Rab have always made brilliant hoods, and this one is no exception; the hood tightens snugly yet comfortably around your head and prevents the hood blowing off in strong winds. Cleverly, when just the lower drawcord on the hood is tightened, it tucks in the other drawcords so they don't slap you in the face when it gets windy. Other features include a fleece lined chin guard and back of neck, two zipped chest pockets, two zipped hand pockets, zipped vents under each arm to dump heat quickly and effectively, an internal mesh security pocket, an internal mesh storage pocket, cuffs which feature excess fabric on the top of the sleeve to protect the top of your hands, elasticated hem and waist drawcords to seal in warmth and lastly some reflective badges on the chest and rear. As you may have already figured out, this jacket is packed with toys!
How does it fit?
It fits into Rab's 'regular' fit block, meaning it's neither wetsuit-tight nor hawaiian shirt loose. It has enough room underneath to fit additional layers during winter, yet it can be tightened using the supplied drawcords and cinches to allow it to fit with just a baselayer underneath. The sleeves are nice and long so they're not half way up your arm while climbing.
