Rab Womens Microlight Alpine Jacket Twilight Information

Season : ZZZ Discontinued

Brand : Rab

Code : RBWMAHTW

This womens specific hooded jacket is so versatile and practical with a minimal streamlined design and good looks. It works superbly as mid layer for active use in cold conditions and would provide enough warmth for you to feel comfortable when out and about on a brisk autumn day on the mountain or around town. With minimal weight and capable of packing into its own stuff sack the Microlight Alpine Jacket can accompany you wherever you go.

Filled with 135g of 750 fill power Hydrophobic European Goose Down in narrow stitch through baffles to minimise down migration and give it great looks. Pertex Microlight fabric provides a lightweight shell that is wind resistant, breathable and durable. A light DWR (durable water repellent) is added to repel moisture and combined with the Hydrophobic down, provides reassuring performance in all but the worst conditions. Rab uses Hydrophobic down in all their down jackets, basically each and every cluster of down is treated with special Nikwax products to make them perform better in damp conditions. Although Hydrophobic down is not waterproof it dries much faster, absorbs less water and retains loft far better than untreated down.

Rab have fitted a fully insulated hood that is adjustable for fit and has a flexible polymer peak, whist not helmet compatible it fits neatly over a beanie without being too big and baggy. The main zip is from the ever reliable YKK brand and features an internal insulated baffle and soft chin guard to avoid rubbing when you're all tucked up inside the jacket. For storage options you get two YKK zipped hand pockets and a YKK zipped external chest pocket; you'll also find the stuff sack inside one of the hand pockets for compact storage. The cuffs are elasticated to fit snugly around your wrists or over gloves and a hemdrawcord helps to seal in the warmth and exclude drafts.

Rab have given the Microlight Alpine a "slim fit" to ensure the down stays as close to your body as possible to optimise the insulation but there is enough room for lightweight layers if you need extra warmth. We've also found that the womens cut on this jacket is particulalry good, it's falttering without being restrictive and seems to fit most shapes and sizes really well.

With a clean, uncluttered and minimalist design this hooded jacket is the perfect winter mid layer for all mountain activities and also performs superbly as an outer jacket for every day duties. This jacket is so versatile that it is suitable for all year round use, even for cooler summer evenings and chilly spring mornings.

How to wash your down products

Having spent years talking to people about down products, whether that’s a jacket, sleeping bag or even a pair of slippers, very few have had the confidence to go ahead and wash the product on their own, especially when they have just spent an arm and a leg on it. This small guide is here to explain that it’s not as daunting and utterly terrifying as it first appears.

Step one: Before you even get near that washing machine, wipe off any excess mud or dirt that may be lingering on the surface of the jacket, as this will clog up the washing machine, eventually rendering it useless.

We recommend the use of Nikwax Down Wash Direct for down products as it’s one hundred percent environmentally friendly and will wash and re-proof the garment without the use of bleach or any other nasty chemicals. What household washing agents can (and often do) is remove the water repellent coating on the fabric of the jacket, whilst also damaging the delicate array of feathers inside.

Step two: We’ll assume in this instance that you’ve been washing other products prior to your down jacket and have used a bleach based detergent. Therefore it’s a good idea to run the washing machine for half an hour or so without anything inside to rinse it clean before adding the Nikwax or putting the jacket in. Also, don’t forget to remove the detergent drawer to give it a wash inside, outside and behind, as detergent can clog up and still enter the washing machine if not cleaned out thoroughly. This ensures that any remnants of detergent are removed and that the Nikwax products will work effectively.

Step three: Set the washing machine to a cold wash (check the garments care label, most tend to be around 30°C) and as delicate as possible. Most washing machines have a “wool” cycle which is ideal.

Step four: If using Nikwax Down Wash Direct, place 100ml in either the tray or directly into the washing machine inside a small pot/ball. If you choose to use another washing product, place the appropriate amount in the machine in the same way.

Step five: Set the washing machine to run on a slow cycle, allowing plenty of time for the jacket to soak up the cleaning/re-proofing product. Most washing machines will have a pre-set time for different washing cycles.

When the cycle has finished be prepared for a shock, your precious bit of kit will come out looking like a soggy ball of material. But don’t worry, you haven’t ruined it, it’s just that all that fluffy down insulation has become water logged and has clumped together. The trick is to now get all that down nice and dry to reinstate its superb insulating properties. Simply hanging it up in a warm place will not work that well. It will take days to properly dry and you will have to constantly break up the clumps to get it thoroughly dry. The best way is to use a tumble dryer; either a domestic one for smaller items or a commercial drier for sleeping bags.

Step six: Pop the garment into the dryer and make sure to select a low heat; a high heat runs the risk of melting seams and fabrics within the garment. It sounds weird, but shove a few tennis balls into the drier with the garment; the tennis balls will bounce around and help to break up the clumps of down. Every 20 minutes, pull the jacket out of the dryer and lie the jacket down on a table. Run your hands over the jacket until you find a 'clump' or ball of down; tease apart this down clump and spread it evenly into the baffle. Once you're confident you've pulled apart every clump to the best of your ability, stick it back in for another 20 minutes. Keep repeating this until there are no more clumps left.

Step seven: When the cycle has finished and you are sure that you have got the garment as dry as possible, hang it up in a warm dry place, an airing cupboard is ideal, for 24 hours. This drives out the last of any dampness and allows the down to loft fully. Take it out and give it a good shake and, hey presto, it’ll be as good as new.

Professional Opinion

Words by Trekitt's Hannah Campbell. Check out her full review and blog here.

So in today’s review we’ll be looking at Rab’s Microlight Alpine jacket. Now, something that I have to stress to about 95% of people I see is that it is NOT a waterproof jacket. It’s not designed as a shell. It is primarily an insulating mid-layer (if you are after a waterproof down jacket then have a look at Rab’s Valiance jacket). Whilst it certainly isn’t the warmest it IS probably one of the most versatile jackets. It suits cold, dry mountain days, is super popular as an ‘around the town’ kinda jacket, and layers up really well due to it’s slim fit, micro-baffle construction. It comes with it’s own little stuff sack and, because of its down insulation and pertex fabric, packs down to almost nothing.

Okay, so let’s break down the techy stuff:

The Down:

In the Microlight Alpine Jacket Rab use 135g of 750 fill power Hydrophobic European Goose down. Each cluster of down is treated with a special Nikwax product that makes the down perform better in damp conditions. This does not meant that the down is waterproof; it does however mean that if it gets wet then it dries quicker, absorbs less water, maintains its loft far better than untreated down and manages sweat really well (super important). Plus, it’s 100% fluorocarbon free – winner!

The Material:

The outer fabric is Pertex Microlight fabric. Pertex Microlight is 20% lighter than Pertex Quantum (which makes up the inner fabric), which allows this jacket to pack down to an incredibly size. It actually has the smallest packing volume of any Pertex material. It’s densely woven structure blocks the wind and traps still air to maintain warmth. This provides a lightweight shell that is wind resistant, breathable and durable. The outer fabric is also coated with a light DWR (durable water repellent) which helps control moisture and protect the down insulation. This, coupled with the Hydrophobic down results in an amazing preforming jacket in a wide range of conditions.

The Construction:

  • Stitch through micro-baffles
  • Wire peaked and fully adjustable hood
  • Drawcord on the hem
  • Elasticated cuff
  • Two YKK zipped hand warmer pockets
  • One YKK zipped chest pocket
  • Stuff sack

The Fit:

The Microlight Alpine is labelled as ‘Slim Fit’ – this means that the baffles sit close to your body to retain as much warmth as possible, whilst still leaving enough room for you to put a light layer (like a thin jumper) on underneath. It does also mean, however, that if you have a bit busty then you may want to try the size up – The baffles shouldn’t pull too tight and distort anywhere otherwise the jacket won’t be able to fully loft and will lose some of its warmth.

IMG_8229

The Good:

Yes, we are faced with the classic blue, pink or black thing – but on top of those Rab also make these in 5 more colours; so there’s plenty of choice (why not try Spruce for something a bit different?). As well as that, this season they have introduced the Microlight Long, which adds about two and a half baffles of length to the original jacket – this allows for that all important bum coverage, and is particularly important if you are a on the taller side. And, as if you needed MORE option, they do a non-hooded version too (my favourite), which makes the idea layering piece (I hate having to pull up more than one hood in the rain).

The Bad:

Whilst the women’s fit is better than the men’s version (which is very boxie) it still isn’t quite right. It can sit too tight across the chest if you have a large bust which means you’d have to go the size up. This can result in you losing the fit in the arms and the hips. So they haven’t quite nailed that bit yet.

The Ugly:

Although Rab have been hard at work creating a jacket that’s stripped down, as light as possible, and has an incredibly impressive warmth to weight ratio, it seems to have all been ignored and is currently most commonly used by football Mums as an out-of-the-car jacket. Whilst this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does mean that the main target market (especially where I am) has shifted from its original alpinist roots (although, this is still who they are trying to aim it at), and these jackets are appearing on every other woman in town. If this doesn’t bother you then great! If it does then you may want to look at their other lightweight jackets that aren’t as popular to the masses (e.g. The Continuum).

As a whole:

In conclusion, we have an incredibly lightweight and packable jacket that suits all conditions from ‘mild enough for a light jacket’ to ‘oh, it’s getting pretty cold now actually’. The fit isn’t quite right for me, and I am more sold on some of Rab’s bigger down products. Reiterating the point that it’s SO important to try them on! The length and fit changes over Rab’s range of jackets. So if the fit isn’t quite right for you then do have a go with some other bits of their range!

And if you’re reading this and you’re thinking “This jacket is SO for me but I’m a vegan” then fear not! Rab also do a Nimbus Jacket which has a very similar fit (the baffle construction is a little different and the hood has a soft peak instead of a flexible wire peak).

Brilliant, lightweight yet warm. Great fit and colour combo. Exactly what I wanted for a brisk walk with my dog where I get warm in my thick coat. Great customer service as well Trekitt, they were happy to exchange item for bigger size when I ordered wrong size due to a computer glitch.

Excellent lightweight down ladies jacket. Go up a size and it leaves room for a lightweight fleece. The back is lower than front slightly so no exposed back when you bend over. Zip pockets and full zip to take hood around face. Recommended.

My second Rab coat, love them, they dont bulk you up, they fold down into nothing and as warm as toast. This review almost lost a star because of the lack of inside pocket. Previous model has it for folding inside itself, negating the need for a separate bag (although supplied with the Spruce Microlight, its possible this could get lost on your travels) The image here isnt true to colour, had to check with Trekitt by phone that I wasnt getting the teal colour. Spruce is more forest green in reality which I reallllly like. Top notch service from Trekitt, and a nice wee bonus to get the discounted price. Five star for Trekkit, will buy both Rab and from Trekitt again.

Fantastic product. Just as good as the reviews promised. Lightweight, windproof, water resistant. Have used it around the crag, out walking and general use in life. Large pockets, which is rare for female clothing, that extend round the side of the jacket. Packs up small too. Would definitely purchase again. 10/10.

I ordered this as a warm lightweight coat for casual wear, I am so happy with it as we recently had the really cold snow spell and this coat kept me warm with a jumper underneath, I normally wear it with tshirt under and still stay warm. Size was true to size I am a 12 and ordered a 12 and can wear a jumper underneath without feeling restricted but it still looks fitted. I would recommend to anyone for hill walking or casual it stylish, warm and lightweight.

Great jacket that weighs next to nothing but is excellent for warmth and comfort. Snug fit even though im usually a size 8 and I bought a size 10. So if like me you like to wear a jumper/fleece too, best to get the next size up. The steel colour in the photo is not exactly what you get - its a more blue/grey shade, but far more flattering, so I really didnt mind. The orange interior is a little more salmon too. Overall, Ive loved it and havent stopped using it!

  • Is the hood removable?
Question asked by Rose on Oct 17 2017 3:38AM
I'm afraid the hood isn't removable, this is to save weight and to pack down smaller. Rab do make a hood-less version of this jacket (link below). Regards, Harry. https://www.trekitt.co.uk/33139/products/rab-womens-microlight-jacket-twilight.aspx
