What is the SL Activ Trekking Boot?
The SL Activ from Scarpa is a technical, supportive and tough leather boot designed for all year round mountain walking. It features a tough Vibram sole, Scarpa's Activfit technology and sections of heat-moulding memory foam to improve overall fit.
What is it made of?
Outer: The SL is built using a 2.8mm Sherpa leather (the toughest and most water-resistant of any full grain leather Scarpa use) impregnated with HS12 and build as a one piece construction for durable weather protection.
Sole: The SL also uses the Vibram biometric trek sole for traction and support when carrying a large pack. The leather and 37.5 lining (and lack of membrane) make this a brilliant boot for warm weather trekking.
What are the features?
The SL Activ features Scarpa's Activfit technology; a fit which allows a wider toe area and greater volume (height within the shoe), a new profile around the front of your foot for better support and a design which promotes your foot rolling forwards rather than slapping the ground like in traditional boots. Further increasing the overall comfort and support of the boot is Scarpa's Heel Tension System. It's a design which uses a TPU material to offer greater stability, reduces torsional twists and adapts better on steep routes and uneven ground. Memory foam is then added to the ankle area of the boot to create a more secure fit. The natural heat of your foot warms up the memory foam, moulding it to your foot shape. Once you take the boots off, they recover back to their original shape. The boot has a significant weight reduction through the use of a mono density outsole which provides exceptional cushioning underfoot.
If you've ever put on a pair of stiff boots and felt restricted and uncomfortable around your Achilles, you're not alone. Scarpa features their Autofit collar in the SL Activ; a design with special padding to ensure maximum adaptability and comfort while walking. This reduces impact stress that rests on the Achilles and malleous area. Moving up to the collar of the boot, Scarpa has incorporated their Flex Point to allow your ankles complete range of movement, even in the stiffest of boots. Flex Point reduces the stiffness of the collar forwards and backwards but still maintains support laterally.
Scarpa calls it 'Speed Lacing'. This is a system which allows optimum adjustment of the volume of the boot by tightening the laces more securely further down the boot. Around halfway down you get an additional hook to allow you to yank the excess space away, hook the laces back and you're good to go.
