"Baalka" is the Sami word for "trail", which is exactly where these trousers come into their own.
The main bulk of the fabric is constructed from Lundhags durable and breathable Cotton and Polyester blend LPC. This fabric is incredibly tightly woven, therefore wind finds it increasingly hard to pass through, making the fabric almost windproof. For added protection, Lundhags add a DWR (durable water repellancy) to the outer fabric, making them water and wind resistant. Although their LPC fabric isn't fully waterproof, it's far more breathable than a fully waterproof fabric and sweat will be able to escape more easily.
For trekking and mountaineering in harsh places, the areas of the trouser that generally encounter the most damage are the bottom of the legs. Lundhags add Cordura reinforcements all throughout this area to add a further barrier against rocks, crampon strikes, brambles and sharp objects in general.
Storage is taken care of by two hand pockets and two cargo pockets for larger items, one of which has a clever phone pocket to separate your phone from other objects. The cargo pockets are spacious and can be used to store anything from a phone, GPS and compass to a map and snacks.
What separates the Baalka trousers from most is the way they add stretch and articulation. As the LPC fabric itself isn't particularly stretchy, stretch panels are added to areas that require the most flexibility. The rear, knees and crotch all get this stretchy, comfortable fabric and allow the trousers to move with you rather than restricting you. Articulated and pre-shaped knees also aid movement and increase comfort and mobility.
These tough, burly trousers aren't just for extreme environments and Scandinavian winters, they're perfect for 3 season walking here in the UK too thanks to the ventilation which is accessible via a large zip that runs from the rear all the way to the knees. This opens up the trousers, allowing air to pass through and moisture to escape.
An adjustable cuff with boot hooks fastens the bottom of the trousers and prevents snow from entering from underneath.
Please note, these trousers tend to run a size smaller than other brands, we would recommend moving up one size to get an accurate fit.
