What is the Tundra Gilet?
The Tundra Gilet is versatile enough to use as a light yet warm outer layer during the autumn or even a cosy midlayer for when the winter hits. It's a stylish looking piece and is less technical than many other jackets in the Montane collection - ideal for casual outdoor adventures, weekends with the kids or even heading to the pub for a spot of lunch.
What is it made of?
Montane has constructed this gilet using a Barrier AC Eco nylon outer and recycled PEAQ Down Eco lining, both coated with a PFC-free durable water repellent. Montane has filled this piece with recycled HyperDRY™ down with 700+ fill power.
Insulation: Filled with 110g (Size UK 10) of 700+ fill power 100% recycled HyperDRY™ down, this gilet provides maximum insulation and warmth for a variety of winter activities.
HyperDRY™ down is down insulation that has been treated to add water repellency. The treatment is PFC free, makes the insulation up to 40 times more hydrophobic than untreated down and four times faster drying. HyperDRY™ treatments also use 25 times less water and five times less chemistry to achieve the same level of performance as conventional methods.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 700 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 700 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from light rain or sweat and condensation that may build up inside the gilet during intenseactivity. PFC free Hydrophobic finishes like HyperDRY™ are not fluorinated, and therefore don't cause damage to the environment like previously used fluorinated treatments - an excellent feature for more eco-conscious adventurers!
Outer: The outer shell of this gilet uses 100% recycled Barrier AC Eco nylon. It feels slightly thicker and heavier than the material used on more technical garments in Montane's range. However, as this wouldn't be classed as a techy mountain piece, it actually works really well! Nylon is incredibly durable, so this gilet will withstand regular use easily without looking shabby and worn after a few months, making it a fantastic investment for your wardrobe.
Lining: The lining is also 100% recycled, constructed with PEAQ Down Eco lining with a grade 4 PFC-free durable water repellent, which helps protect down inside from getting wet. PEAQ Down Eco lining uses bluesign® approved recycled nylon plain weave, which is durable and abrasion resistant yet lightweight. It feels soft next to the skin and is highly breathable, improving comfort and helping regulate temperature during intense activity.
What are its features?
Montane has designed the Tundra with a large stitched baffle construction that looks modern and stylish. Stitch through baffles help prevent down migration for an even spread of warmth across the garment. It has a lovely neat finish that looks casual and versatile enough to wear for any occasion, whether you're doing the weekly shop, meeting friends for coffee or taking a stroll around the local park.
The collar sits fairly high on the neck, offering better coverage and improved warmth retention. Like the body of the gilet, it's fully insulated for maximum warmth.
The front is fastened using a YKK® full-length zip with an internal storm flap to help keep the weather out, even when partially zipped up.
There are two subtle hand pockets for storage which are the perfect size for valuables such as a purse, mobile phone, keys or doggy bags.
Armholes are lycra bound, giving plenty of stretch to improve freedom of movement without adding weight or bulk, making lifting the kids up or carrying heavy shopping bags a little easier. At the bottom is an adjustable hem drawcord, allowing you to cinch in the gilet around the hips and adapt the fit to suit your specific preferences and style. To finish the design, Montane has added small, tonal branding at the front, just above the hem, which looks sleek and smart.
