What is the Ortles Jacket?

Featuring a technical insulation, a tough water and wind resistant outer fabric and a feature set intended for mountaineering and climbing, the Ortles is happiest at altitude.

What is the Ortles made of?

Insulation: Probably the most technical, mind-bending description of an insulation we've ever seen lies in the Ortles, so we'll try and explain it in a logical way! The Ortles features Salewa's TirolWool Celliant insulation; this lightweight insulation combines two fibres, polyester and wool. The polyester has been combined with heat-reactive minerals to essentially regulate your temperature as you stop and start. For example, you're heading up a steep scramble, sweating heavily and exterting a lot of energy, you then reach the summit and stop, therefore cooling yourself down; these fibres attempt to prevent you over-cooling when you reach the summit, and over-heating as you climb. The other fabric used is a high-quality wool sourced from Tirolean sheep to provide warmth and natural odour-resistant properties when using the Ortles for multi-day trips. This insulation is lightweight, warm when wet and incredibly effective; even more so when Salewa position it in specific areas prone to cold.

Outer fabric: The main fabric used is a super durable double ripstop nylon, ensuring rocks, ice and other abrasive objects in the mountains don't ruin your jacket on its first outing; even more durable reinforcements are then added to the shoulders to deal with snowfall, rucksack straps and general abrasion. Both of these fabrics are then coated in a durable water repellency to offer protection when the weather turns against you. All of these fabrics are BlueSign approved, meaning they perform well for you and for the environment.

Does it have any other features?

Yes, quite a few! An insulated hood with an integrated collar adds extra warmth when stationary, yet still insulates your neck when the hood is down. An elasticated cuff and a one-handed hem adjuster seals out the cold and prevents snow entering, while a windproof flap sits behind the zip to prevent cold spots. A zipped chest pocket, two hand pockets and two inner pockets store items such as gloves, snacks and other essentials.

How does the Ortles fit?

Featuring a slim, athetic fit, the Ortles is designed to be unrestrictive yet snug enough to keep you warm while in freezing environments. Salewa's free motion fit ensures the hem doesn't lift while climbing, and ergonomically shaped sleeves and shoulders allow you to layer up without restricting movement.

Where does it fit in the layering system?

The Ortles is primarily designed to be used with just a baselayer underneath and nothing over the top unless conditions are less favourable. It performs best when climbing or mountaineering as an outer layer, however in heavy rain it can also be used underneath a shell jacket. The nature of the jacket means if you do get caught out in the rain, it will still stay warm and will dry quickly.

Summary

The Ortles TirolWool Celliant Jacket (rolls off the tongue, right?) is perfect for cold days in the mountains, whether that includes an ice climb, a belay or a mountain summit. A tough outer fabric, versatile insulation and an alpine fit ensures performance in some of the most extreme conditions.
