About Trekitt

Our Story

Established in Abergavenny at the foot of the Black Mountains in 1986, Trekitt is family owned and run. The thing that continues to drive and inspire us is our passion for the mountains and wild places and being able to share our experiences and adventures with our customers. We do this because we love doing it; and because the independent outdoor industry remains one of those rare places where the people and their passions matter much more than meeting shareholder expectations or corporate growth forecasts.

Trekitt strives to supply the best quality kit from the best brands for walkers, mountaineers, climbers and travellers so you can be assured of its performance whatever your adventure. We carefully select our range to provide kit that is fit for purpose, high performance, and as gear freaks ourselves, is the sort of stuff that excites us and we would buy personally.

Our aim is to hold excellent stock levels of the kit we have selected; so, the stock level you see on our website is the actual stock that we hold in our dedicated warehouse (and the shop) in Hereford. All orders are processed in the warehouse by our own processing team. We also have a dedicated Customer Support team who can answer your questions and queries or even run around and measure clothing so you can be sure of the correct fit.

Our normal operating hours are Monday to Saturday from 09:00 - 17:30, we are closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays because we value our free time and want to keep it that way. If you have any questions about your requirements, or just want to talk to a fellow enthusiast about kit, give us a call, send us an email, or go on "live chat" online.

Over the years we have forged strong links with like-minded organisations and we strongly believe in supporting those who support others. Both Paul and Mark have been active members of Longtown Mountain Rescue Team and Trekitt is proud to be the main sponsor of their annual fundraising event, the "Big Black Mountain Challenge". Dick Trepte 1937-2010
The original founding father of Trekitt, and actual father of the two current directors.

He was a keen walker, leading walks all over the globe, particularly in Nepal, a country that he came to love dearly. He has passed on his enthusiasm for the mountains and the natural world to the business and we are all still very much aware of his great presence and influence.

Dick was a natural leader, sociable and great company; he loved nothing better than a pint of ale and the good company of mates after a day in the hills. He also liked to put something back, working as a voluntary warden in the Lake District, and as a walks leader for the Ramblers Association and HF Holidays.

Trekitt is Dick's legacy to us all.

Paul Trepte
Managing Director

I joined the family firm in 1989 and started working in the Abergavenny shop. I now look after most things Trekitt'y with an emphasis on the website and marketing. For the past 25 years I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the outdoor industry with its friendly and many varied characters.

I started exploring the hills and mountains of the UK as a child; being dragged up Helvellyn by my Dad at eleven years old was my first experience of a proper mountain. This adventure ignited my passion for the outdoors and I have enjoyed the Worlds Mountains and special places on foot, under canvas, on various bikes, on the end of a rope, on skis, and even on the back of an elephant.

Being in the wild places of creation feeds my soul; even if it's just dog walking around my local woods in the Monnow Valley.

Mark Trepte
Commercial Director

I have been at Trekitt since 1986 and apart from keeping me in a job, it has given me the chance to enjoy the world in many ways.

As an outdoor novice when I started, I had a great time climbing and Mountain Marathon-ing in the nineties and still partake in Snowboarding and Mountain Biking to this day. Added to this have been Fell-Running, Scrambling and Climbing as well as good old-fashioned Hill Walking. All of these varied outdoor sports have fed my passion for this great business.

I have travelled extensively in India (mostly on a Royal Enfield) and summited Mt Elbrus in Russia a couple of years ago. This has ignited a late surge of desire for some Alpine Mountaineering before my legs give out.

I consider myself very lucky, and hope to stay this lucky for many years to come.

Chick Godsell
Customer Service Assistant

I have been with Trekitt since 2003 and have held many different positions. I now make sure all of our lovely internet customers are all happy, as well as dealing with any warranty returns that may come in.

I have always enjoyed the outdoors and activities including walking, climbing, caving, diving, archery and sailing. I studied outdoor pursuits at college and have volunteered as a leader for a charity called Fairbridge who helped inner city youths by showing them all the things the outdoors has to offer.

The pinnacle of my time with Trekitt was being the first female winner of the Outdoor Industry Retail Employee of the year award in 2009.

Dave Cassidy
Operations Manager and Director

You might know me as that guy who works at Trekitt and calls everybody dude. You would be right; I've been working for Trekitt on and off for over thirteen years now, and it just keeps getting better. I have worked in most capacities for the company and am now the Operations Manager; I also help with product ranging and buying.

In my spare time, I'm a bit of a jack of all trades. I like to bike, climb, walk and surf a bit when the opportunity arises. I'm always up for seeing new countries and experiencing good people.

Steve Davies
Buyer & Database Manager

I've been working for Trekitt since 2012 having previously worked as an Outdoor Instructor. I'm normally to be found upstairs tucked away, pouring over an Excel spreadsheet trying to decide what to buy and of what quantity.

My role as a Buyer suits me perfectly as I am quite possibly the biggest kit geek going. When not engrossed with numbers and spreadsheets, I like to spend as much time as possible outdoors. I'm a keen Mountain Biker, Climber and Hill Walker. I also dabble in Caving, Canoeing and Kayaking.

Although Hereford is probably not top of people's list for an abundance of outdoor activities, it has what I refer to as "The 40 Minute Rule". You're literally 40 minutes from a wide selection of AONB's, National Parks and are surrounded by countryside. All ideal places to venture out into and explore.

Will Condie
Website and Marketing Manager

Before I joined the Trekitt Team back in 2013, I had gained experience in the outdoor industry by teaching bushcraft and survival. This meant spending long periods of time outdoors, often uncomfortably due to my prior lack of knowledge about outdoor kit, but hey, at least I could light a fire and dry off when I got wet.

My Trekitt life began with 2 shifts a week on the shop floor, but a year or so down the line this evolved into a fulltime role upstairs helping Paul with the writing of product descriptions and focusing on our rudimentary social media presence. A few years on, and thanks to the addition of Harry and Hannah, we now have a fully-fledged Marketing Department.

When I'm not at work I'll either be on my mountain bike with the rest of the Trekitt biking crew, climbing and bouldering down the local wall or crag, or camping in south Wales trying to surf.

Murphy
Biscuit Eating Team

Murphy is the official "shop dog", his main role is to come to work with Paul to keep him company and pester him to go out for a walk at lunchtime to escape from the computer. His days of chasing mountain bikes and tearing over the fells are coming to an end as he grows old (disgracefully) but he's still happy to leap in the river after a stick and chase squirrels around the woods.

Harry Bradbury
Website and Digital Marketing

I started off life roaming the local Herefordshire countryside as a "professional" den builder and general messer-upper of land. Together with my equally obsessed friend and work colleague Jamie, we would spend our days spinning about the family fields on quad bikes creating havoc and mess, "borrowing" supplies of wood to expand the ever-growing Den or simply exploring on our bikes. I've since then abandoned that and progressed onto mountain biking, street trials, a bit of photography here and there and anything mountainous with my lunatic spaniel. If I'm exploring somewhere new with a camera and a bike, I'm happy.

My role within Trekitt involves anything from photography, videography and post film editing, to social media and writing the descriptions you see on our website. Essentially, I'm the one half of the 'internetty social media people'. You'll find me upstairs tucked away behind my desk, most likely in my own little world of editing.

Brennen Page
Warehouse Assistant

My role within Trekitt involves picking orders, transporting stock between locations and general warehouse duties. Prior to working at Trekitt I worked as an outdoor pursuits instructor for Taste for Adventure where I gained all of my experience in the great outdoors working with "The Stokes" family. I enjoy climbing and extreme dog walking, I love to ski at least once a year and love the odd Canadian canoe trip down the River Wye.

When I am not outdoors my other passion is martial arts. I have been doing Tae Kwon Do since the age of 7 and hold a 5th Degree black belt. I am the chief instructor at both Hereford and Abergavenny clubs and teach 4 nights per week.

Pam Owen
Warehouse Manager

After many years of spending most of my disposable (and non-disposable) income at Trekitt, I was finally adopted into the Trekitt family in April 2016. I am now the Manager at the Warehouse with a wonderful team.

When I'm not organising van loads of stock to be sent out, I love nothing more than getting out in the countryside with Peggy the Dog or whizzing around on my bike with the wind in my hair. Finally, when I want to truly escape the hustle and bustle (and the boys at the warehouse), a spot of camping is definitely my tonic of choice.

Richie Williamson
Assistant Merchandiser

Here at Trekitt, my role is to assist Steve in ensuring we have the correct amount of stock and the right products. I essentially spend most of my day on Excel, looking at sales data to identify any patterns or trends.

My passion outside work is cycling. Originally competing in road racing, I now spend my time riding my gravel bikes (yes, i have 2!), exploring local bridleways, forests and mountains. Basically, anywhere I can ride that isn't tarmac! Next year, I plan to go on several bike packing trips to explore new areas i have yet to visit. Since starting at Trekitt, I've also taken up bouldering, which I have found extremely enjoyable and challenging."

Saul Davies
Retail Supervisor

Trekitt is where I originally went to recharge my batteries. As strange as this may sound, my past commitments required a different amount of care, concentration and skill that you'd expect when being a general handy man for the elderly. I've since then become a full time assistant manager at Trekitt, becoming the friendly face of the shop floor, assisting with general internetty jobs and enjoying the new challenges that my roles offer me.

When I'm not working, I will either be building or riding one of my many bikes, camping out in the woods doing my bushcrafty thing or just generally ambling around the local countryside taking in all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Harry

I started off life roaming my local countryside as a "professional" den builder and general messer-upper of land. Together with my equally obsessed friend and the use of a quad bike we spent our days spinning about fields creating havoc and mess. I've since then abandoned that and progressed to Mountain Biking and Brakeless Street Trials. In my spare time I'm generally riding a bike of some description, up the mountains with my lunatic Spaniel or day dreaming of all the above.

My role within Trekitt mainly involve sales on the shop floor advising customers and as of late I now assist with a few social media aspects such as Instagram and Facebook.

Dom Haseldine
Retail Manager

Living in the shadow of the Catsback I have grown up with an affinity toward the outdoors. When I'm not on the shop floor I can be found in various locations around Herefordshire, shooting, climbing and walking. Photography is also a passion of mine, so as you can imagine, I have plenty of pictures of the Black Mountains.

When I'm not out n' about enjoying life, you can find me "getting my nerd on" constructing and painting little plastic models ready for battle.

Hannah Campbell
Internet and Marketing Assistant

I began Trekitt as one of the main smiling faces you'd see if you paid us a visit in person; I've since made the move upstairs to join the marketing team to assist with the website, social media and video production. I'm a climbing, paragliding, trail running, hiking, adventuring kinda human, so I've always been well supported by Trekitt, even prior to working here.

Before all of this I grew up in various locations across Africa, I blame this for my constant hunger for the outdoors and desire to travel. I currently live in Crickhowell, so I'm very fortunate to have the Brecon Beacons in my front garden. Because of this I am constantly out in the mountains, so if you ever need advice on where to explore then I'm your lady.

Ian Lydford
Warehouse Assistant

My role within Trekitt is working at the heart of the business, the warehouse. This involves anything from transporting stock between locations, to picking, packing and processing orders ready to be delivered.

When not in Trekitt, I'm frequently outdoors. I started as an adventurous child, just exploring the countryside with friends, working my way through Cubs, Scouts and Air Training Corps, volunteering for everything. Now my outdoor activities are principally with a local Scout troop, teaching camp-craft, navigation, pioneering and general self-reliance. I like to travel light, so I'm refining my kit and my packing discipline to carry the minimum to camp.

John Lowe
Warehouse Assistant

I work behind the scenes processing internet sales and making sure the shop is stocked.

I have always been an outdoor person, with 22 years of military service under my belt. At the weekend you will find me on my mountain bike, mainly around my local Welsh hills and Forest of Dean, or getting my boots on and walking over the Beacons and Black Mountains.

Fiona Trepte
Financial Controller

I have been working at Trekitt for many years as Financial Controller, originally on a part time basis but since March 2017 I have joined full time to meet the demands of this growing business. Basically, I look after all the money stuff and am (jokingly?) nicknamed the "real" boss.

Married to Paul, I love working in a family business and especially one where the "team" really matter. In my spare time I enjoy getting out into the beautiful Monmouthshire countryside with Murphy but draw the line at being dragged up mountains on the end of a rope. Travel is my other passion and I have been fortunate enough to visit some beautiful and exotic locations across the globe.

Ben Darby
Retail Sales Assistant

Before working at Trekitt I trained and worked as a photographer, primarily focusing on landscape imagery. This allowed me to indulge my passions for photography and the outdoors.

Outside of work I can still usually be found hiking or biking to new locations to photograph and generally just enjoying the incredible landscapes we have on our doorstep. Either that or I'll be curling my moustache.

Working on the Shop floor is a great opportunity to share knowledge, both to customers in regard to gear, but also from customers themselves about new places to explore.

Rich Davies
Retail Assistant Manager

Having spent most of my working life in the snow-capped french alps or on the waters of various rivers around the world, it was a natural progression for me to become part of the Trekitt team. Using my knowledge of the equipment from my first hand experiences, my job is to help you get the items best suited for your situation and needs.

In my spare time you will find me at a Wye Valley crag, out on a mountain bike trail or when that white fluffy stuff comes down, the touring skis come out of their summer hibernation to start finding the steep and deep powder lines in the Alps.

Matt Burford
Retail Sales Assistant

Before working here at Trekitt I worked for 4 years as an outdoor education instructor. Trekitt seemed like the next logical step in my career. I use my knowledge of mountaineering equipment and experience and apply it to help every one of our customers get the right equipment, and the right advice to boot.

When I'm not working in the shop I spend as much time as is possible in the mountains; I love climbing, hiking and scrambling. The worse the weather, the better the day.

Ollie Matthews
Warehouse Supervisor

Like many other members of the Trekitt Team, I originally started as a customer who used to frequent the Trekitt shop in Hereford where I could feed my hunger for kit and climbing gear.

My love for climbing started indoors but I was soon finding myself many metres up at the local crag with marginal gear placements, disco knee shaking and savouring every minute of it! My lust for heights doesn't stop there, I also enjoy jumping out of planes, powered and non-powered paragliding and flying about in microlights to various places in the UK and even in the French Alps taking in views of Mont Blanc.

Greg Dick
Customer Service Assistant

Originally from New Zealand, I'm a keen outdoors enthusiast. Back in the 'land of the long white cloud' I drove Jet Boats, guided Whitewater Rafting trips and spent 3 years throwing people off a bridge with a rubber band attached to their ankles. Since moving to the UK 16 years ago I've enjoyed all the delights that the Wye Valley has to offer including Climbing, Paddling and Mountain Biking. I have a young family now and I enjoy getting outdoors with them, as long as the All Blacks aren't playing at the time.

I'm on the phone, live chat and answering emails in the customer services department helping customers with any questions they have about our products and service.

Jacob Ritchie
Customer Service Assistant

Ever since being a child I have loved exploring the outdoors, whether it be Sunday afternoon hikes or adventuring through the local woods.

I have been fortunate enough to travel to many different countries and explore many different cultures. From diving off waterfalls in India, skiing in the Cypriot mountains or trekking through the desert in Jordan, I thrive on adventure.

My role as a customer service assistant is to help customers with any questions they may have and to provide helpful product knowledge.

Alex Haseldine
Customer Services Manager

Throughout life, I have always enjoyed getting outdoors and exploring as much as possible, be it my own back garden (which happens to be the Brecon Beacons National Park) or going further afield. I have dipped my toe into travelling and have been lucky enough to visit places such as Vals in Switzerland, hike the Kumano Kodo in Japan and got engaged atop Ben Nevis!

Being an active problem solver and always happy to chat about the outdoors, the Customer Service department was a natural fit for myself. I'm often mistaken for a man over email due to the ambiguous first name, however I have been told by a Trekitt customer that I have a phone voice similar to Pip from The Archers; I think it was aimed as a compliment and I have taken it as such.

"I first noticed Trekitt by their fantastic YouTube videos, which were very informative and honest. So I headed on over to the website and looked at various coats to try and determine which to go for. Being a bit of a muppet I didn't really have a clue what was best so contacted customer services who directed me to a few coats but said he would go away (over the weekend!) and think some more and get back to me Monday. I thought it was just a fob off as the conversation had been going a while but low and behold on Monday morning an email appears with suggestions! I was so pleasantly surprised that if I hadn't already been convinced to buy with them, it was concreted then. I bought 2 coats from them the same day and very shortly after they appeared. The fit was exactly as they had suggested it would be, the quality of the items was as described and I am very happy with them. In this day and age of large companies taking a backward step from customer service, it is such a breath of fresh air to be treated with such a personal touch. If I ever need anything outdoorsy, I know exactly where I'm going."
