Patagonia History

Over 50 Years of Protecting Wild Places

The Story of Patagonia
Founded in 1973 by climber Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia began by forging climbing equipment for his own expeditions. What started as a small climbing company soon expanded into technical outdoor clothing designed for mountaineers, climbers and adventurers who need reliable gear in demanding environments.

Today, Patagonia is recognised worldwide for creating high-performance outdoor clothing, including jackets, fleeces and technical layers built for climbing, hiking and mountain exploration. From the beginning, the company has believed that business should help protect the wild places that inspire outdoor adventure.

That philosophy has shaped Patagonia’s approach to product design and environmental responsibility. The brand has helped lead the outdoor industry in adopting recycled materials, responsible manufacturing and durable clothing designed to last, reducing the impact outdoor gear has on the planet.

Environmental activism is central to Patagonia’s mission. As a founding member of 1% for the Planet, the company has helped direct more than $240 million to grassroots environmental organisations working to protect wild places, defend ecosystems and tackle the climate crisis.

Today, Patagonia continues to combine technical outdoor clothing with environmental advocacy, supporting organisations and initiatives dedicated to protecting the landscapes and communities that make outdoor exploration possible.

FAQ
Is Patagonia gear sustainable?
Patagonia works hard to create environmentally and socially responsible gear. They use different third-party accredited programs and innovative materials to reduce their impact. Further to addressing their product footprint, Patagonia give 1% of every sale and their excess profits to groups addressing the climate crisis. They acknowledge that no clothing can be truly sustainable, as to be truly sustainable would be to make nothing at all.
How do you recycle Patagonia products?
Patagonia are committed to making sure your gear lasts longer by offering free repair. With all gear, there comes a time where it has reached the end of its usable life and should be recycled. You can send any irreparable items to the Patagonia Service Centre or to a Patagonia store where it will be recycled or stored until a time this is possible.
Where is Patagonia gear produced?
Over 85% of Patagonia product is made in a Fair Trade Certified Factory in countries such as the USA, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. By partnering with accredited third parties, Patagonia has been able to collaborate with workers and farmers to develop initiatives that sequester carbon and elevate working conditions.
How long does Patagonia clothing last?
Patagonia is built to last a lifetime, and can be repaired if it needs to, ensuring these products can be passed down through generations instead of ending up in landfill. Patagonia also promotes its own repair programmes, alongside selling easy DIY repair kits for at-home fixes.
Where is Patagonia clothing sold?
In the UK, Patagonia is sold at verified retailers such as Trekitt and on its own website. Shop Patagonia clothing and equipment through trusted stockists to ensure you get genuine product, expert advice and the right gear for your adventures.
