Mountain Equipment History
Over 60 Years of Expedition Heritage
THE STORY OF MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT
Mountain Equipment was founded in 1961 by climber Peter Hutchinson in Manchester, England. After struggling to find equipment capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of Himalayan expeditions, Hutchinson began importing and developing reliable down clothing and expedition gear for climbers heading to the world’s highest mountains.
Throughout the following decades, Mountain Equipment built a reputation for creating equipment that could be trusted in extreme environments. The brand supplied clothing and sleeping bags for numerous expeditions to the Himalayas and other high mountain ranges, helping climbers push the limits of what was possible in the mountains.
Today, Mountain Equipment continues to design technical clothing for climbers, mountaineers and hillwalkers. From lightweight alpine layers to expedition down jackets, their products are built with a focus on reliability, protection and performance in demanding mountain conditions.
