Trekitt’s Experts’ Top Tips for Sleeping Bags

Straight from the people who use sleeping bags in real UK conditions — quick, practical tips to help you stay warmer, drier and more comfortable outdoors.

"Warm Up Before You Zip Up"
Get your blood circulation pumping just before bed - as your body relaxes, body temperature drops. To get as much heat into your bag to begin with, do some star jumps before you get into it to keep it as toasty as possible.
"Don’t Oversize Your Bag"
When choosing a sleeping bag, avoid too much empty air inside, e.g. don't buy a bag that's too big. It may seem comfy when you have all the room in the world to move around, but all that extra air needs to be heated, leaving you colder than if you were in a perfectly shaped bag.
"Store It Loose, Not Squashed"
Store your sleeping bag uncompressed. When you return from a trip, remove your sleeping bag from the compression bag and store it uncompressed. This will allow the insulation to breathe, regain its original shape and loft, and therefore retain the bag's heat-retention properties.
"Use a Liner for Warmth and Cleanliness"
Use a sleeping bag liner to increase warmth and to help keep your sleeping bag clean for longer. Liners are available in different warmth ratings and can add several degrees of warmth to your sleeping bag. They are much easier to whip out at the end of a trip and chuck in the wash too, keeping your sleeping bag cleaner for longer.
"Preheat with a Hot Water Bottle"
Preheat your sleeping bag with a nalgene bottle full of hot water to help keep those shivers at bay when getting into a cold bag. Just make sure the lid is done up properly!
"Make the Most of Morning Sun"
If camping for multiple days, try to make the most of any morning sunshine and drape your sleeping bag over your tent to help it dry out thoroughly between uses. Only do this if your tent is nice and dry and it's not too windy, nobody needs their sleeping bag to blow away!
"Let It Breathe Before Packing"
If your tent outer isn't dry enough to drape your sleeping bag over, leave your sleeping bag out and unzipped in your tent for as long as you can before packing it away so it can breathe. Moisture can build up over multiple days making down insulation less effective. A dry sleeping bag is a happy sleeping bag.
"Stuff, Don't Fold"
It's called a stuff sack for a reason! Stuff your sleeping bag back in to it's stuff sack rather than folding and rolling. It's much easier and also keeps the wear on the bag random. Folding and rolling can often lead to insulation collecting in one area, leaving cold spots in the bag over time.

FAQ

What temperature sleeping bag do I need for UK camping?
For most UK spring-to-autumn camping, choose a sleeping bag with a comfort rating between -3°C and -6°C. For summer campsite trips, 0°C to +5°C is usually suitable, while winter camping often requires temperatures below -10 °C. Your sleeping mat insulation affects warmth just as much as the sleeping bag itself.
What do sleeping bag temperature ratings actually mean?
Sleeping bag temperature ratings describe the conditions a bag is designed for under EN / ISO testing standards. Comfort is the temperature most people sleep well at, limit is the lowest temperature a warm sleeper may tolerate, and extreme is for survival only. Always choose your sleeping bag based on its comfort rating.
What sleeping bag should I choose for UK 3-season camping?
A typical UK 3-season sleeping bag has a comfort rating between -3°C and -6°C. This works from early spring through to mid-autumn across most British conditions. Look for an insulated hood, a zip draft baffle, a neck collar, and lightweight, packable insulation.
What sleeping bag rating is best for summer camping in the UK?
For summer camping in the UK, choose a sleeping bag with a comfort rating between 0°C and +5°C. For hill and mountain areas such as the Lake District, Eryri (Snowdonia) or the Cairngorms, a slightly warmer -1 °C to -4 °C comfort rating is often more reliable.
Is down or synthetic better for UK camping?
Down insulation is lighter and packs smaller, while synthetic insulation performs better in damp conditions. Down is usually preferred for backpacking because it offers excellent warmth-to-weight performance. Synthetic sleeping bags are often better for beginners, wet-weather use and easier maintenance.
Are women's sleeping bags warmer than men's?
Women's sleeping bags are not simply warmer overall, but they are designed to retain heat more efficiently for many female sleepers. They often include extra insulation around the feet and torso, shorter overall length, narrower shoulders and wider hip shaping.
How important is sleeping bag shape?
Sleeping bag shape affects warmth, comfort and pack size. Mummy-shaped sleeping bags are the warmest and most efficient for backpacking, rectangular bags offer more campsite comfort, and semi-rectangular bags balance comfort with warmth. Most UK backpackers choose mummy-shaped sleeping bags.
Does a sleeping mat affect how warm my sleeping bag feels?
Yes. Your sleeping mat provides insulation from the ground, which a sleeping bag cannot do on its own. For most UK 3-season trips, look for a mat with an R-value around 3 to 4. Even a warm sleeping bag can feel cold if your mat insulation is too low.
What size sleeping bag should I choose?
Choose a sleeping bag that closely matches your height to improve warmth and comfort. A bag that is too large creates unused air space that is harder to warm, while a bag that is too small can compress the insulation, reducing warmth.
Can I use a 3-season sleeping bag in winter?
A 3-season sleeping bag can work in mild winter conditions, but it is not designed for full winter use. For colder trips, use a warm liner, an insulated winter mat with an R-value of 5 or higher, and avoid freezing conditions. For mountain winter camping, choose a dedicated winter bag with a -10°C comfort rating or lower.
Where can I buy lightweight sleeping bags online in the UK?
You can buy lightweight sleeping bags online from specialist outdoor retailers like Trekitt, where technical backpacking sleeping bags are selected for UK conditions and real hill use. Trekitt stocks lightweight options from trusted brands including Rab, Mountain Equipment, NEMO, Big Agnes and Sea to Summit.
