Crampons

We've been there, stood at the base of a snowy ridge or halfway up an icy gully, grateful for the bite of a good pair of crampons underfoot. When winter takes hold and the hills turn white, having the right crampons isn't just a good idea—it's essential.

Of course, we wouldn't go into the mountains without the kit we trust. Grivel crampons have been part of our winter packs for years—rugged, reliable, and designed to take a beating. And we're big fans of Petzl crampons too, especially for their clever adjustment systems and solid, dependable grip on everything from icy approaches to vertical icefalls.

If you're just starting winter hillwalking or sticking to gentler terrain, C1 crampons are a brilliant place to start. We've used these on classic snowy routes where flexibility and ease of use matter most—they're lightweight, simple to fit, and ideal for less technical ground. Stepping things up a notch, C2 crampons offer that extra bit of stiffness and precision, perfect for more adventurous mountaineering routes and mixed ground—we've worn these on classic Scottish winter days and can vouch for their versatility. And when things get steep and technical—vertical ice, gnarly mixed climbs—C3 crampons are our go-to. They're stiff, aggressive, and built for serious climbing, and we've trusted them on some pretty wild routes over the years.

Not sure which is right for you? Head over to our Guide to Crampons for a detailed breakdown of C ratings, boot compatibility, and expert advice from our own time out in the hills.
