What is the Fitzroy Jacket?

The Fitzroy Jacket is a synthetically filled insulated jacket. Designed to be thrown over all your layers, it is ideally suited to belaying when out in the elements, or simply as a warm layer when stopping on a hike in adverse conditions. Combining the warmth of Primaloft Gold insulation with the water resistance and windproofing of a Drilite 30D outer, the Fitzroy will cope with pretty much anything mother nature can throw at you when out on a winter climb/belay. It truly excels at cold weather functionality.

What is the Fitzroy Jacket made from?

Drilite Loft 30D outer fabric offers good abrasion resistance, as well as wind proofing and high water-resistance, especially when combined with the factory DWR coating to further help repel water.

The insulation comes in the form of Primaloft Gold synthetic insulation. Primaloft Gold is one of the finest synthetic insulations available, offering incredible warmth for its weight as well as a good pack-size. It also performs consistently in wet conditions, making it a perfect belay layer. The Fitzroy has 100g in the body and 80g in the arms/hood, providing high levels of warmth.

What are its features?

The Fitzroy Jacket is feature packed, but manages to keep its styling minimal and considered, meaning there is less to get in the way when out in the mountains using it.

Starting from the top, the hood is both insulated and helmet compatible, ideal for throwing on when belaying, it also adjusts small enough to provide warmth when not wearing a helmet. The hood features an adjustable wired visor to help maintain vision. The sleeves are pre-shaped for full freedom of movement and articulation. A 2-way YKK centre front zip with an insulated rear baffle to eliminate cold spots is front and centre on the Citadel, meaning it is fully harness compatible. Two zipped, fleece lined handwarmer pockets and one napoleon chest pocket and two internal mesh pockets take care of storage, plenty of space for spare gloves, hats, maps and the all-important snacks.

How does the Fitzroy Jacket fit?

The Fitzroy Jacket has been designed as a belay jacket, designed to be thrown over the top of all your other layers to keep the worst of the weather out and crucial warmth in. Because of this it is a larger cut than some other insulated jackets.

Where does it fit in the layering system?

The Fitzroy is your belay jacket. Throw it over everything else and keep yourself warm and dry.

Care & Advice

How Should Your Insulated Jacket Fit?

Insulated jackets are pedantic little things. Too tight and you'll compress the insulation and limit the warmth capabilities of your brand new jacket, too loose and you'll spend hours warming up the dead space inside the jacket. Getting the correct fit isn't just about aesthetics, it will determine how warm you are.

The Incorrect Fit

Too loose: A jacket which is too loose will keep you relatively warm, however it will take far longer to do so and will waste large amounts of your precious energy. An insulated jacket works by trapping the natural heat that your body gives off in the fibres of the insulation; this creates a micro-climate inside your jacket, keeping you warm and toasty. If your jacket is too loose, heat will be able to escape through the hem, the sleeves and the neck of the jacket; it's a little like sticking the heating on in your car with the windows cracked open - it will heat up, just incredibly slowly.

Too tight: A jacket which is too tight is arguably worse than one that is too loose. If your jacket is far too tight, the baffles can compress to a point where the insulation can't loft effectively, limiting the amount of warmth it can trap. Essentially, it won't work!

The Correct Fit
It's a tricky one to explain, but it's somewhere in the middle. You've first got to consider how many layers you'll tend to wear underneath; will you have just a t-shirt then the jacket, or possibly a baselayer, midlayer and then the jacket? When you've figured out your layers and you've popped your insulated jacket over the top, you shouldn't have any dead space inside. The cuffs and hem should be comfortably sealed around your waist and wrists with room to move. You should be able to lift an arm up above your head without the hem of the jacket lifting more than an inch or so, and the sleeves should be long enough that when carrying out the same motion, they aren't mid-way up your forearm. Your shoulders and chest area should have enough room so that your hands can touch behind your back without feeling restricted.

Additional Information
Lastly, consider which activites you'll primarily be carrying out while wearing the jacket. Are you primarily using it as a winter climbing piece, or an everyday/dog walking jacket? You'll find that technical climbing jackets tend to feature a shorter cut, while urban and casual jackets feature a longer cut to offer additional warmth with less mobility.

"I first noticed Trekitt by their fantastic YouTube videos, which were very informative and honest. So I headed on over to the website and looked at various coats to try and determine which to go for. Being a bit of a muppet I didn't really have a clue what was best so contacted customer services who directed me to a few coats but said he would go away (over the weekend!) and think some more and get back to me Monday. I thought it was just a fob off as the conversation had been going a while but low and behold on Monday morning an email appears with suggestions! I was so pleasantly surprised that if I hadn't already been convinced to buy with them, it was concreted then. I bought 2 coats from them the same day and very shortly after they appeared. The fit was exactly as they had suggested it would be, the quality of the items was as described and I am very happy with them. In this day and age of large companies taking a backward step from customer service, it is such a breath of fresh air to be treated with such a personal touch. If I ever need anything outdoorsy, I know exactly where I'm going."
