What are the Makalu Pants?

The Makalu Pants are from M.E are a pair of fully waterproof overtrousers. They are comfortable enough to be worn all day over the top of a pair of baselayers or on their own but are also light enough to be stashed in your pack as an emergency pair of bottoms on the days when you're not sure if the weather will change.

What are the Makalu Pants made of?

The pants feature a fully waterproof Gore-Tex 3-layer construction with an incredibly durable 75 denier nylon face fabric that has exceptional abrasion resistance and durability. This outer fabric is then coated in a durable water repellent coating to allow water to bead off the surface, increasing breathability. It has a surprisingly supple feel and is breathable enough to cope with high aerobic, non-stop routes.

What are the features?

The Makalu Pants feature an integrated belt with a double press stud waist closue and brace attatchment points that are low profile and don't dig in when wearing a harness or hipbelt. ¾ length zips sit on the outside of each leg so you can easily slide them on and off when they're damp and mucky, even if you have chunky B-rated boots on. There is further adjustability comes in the hem that helps to protect from water and snow ingress. The Makalus also have reinforced kick strips for added durability.

How do the Makalu Pants fit?

The Makalu Pants fit into Mountain Equipments 'Alpine Fit' block - it is trimmed right down to eradicate unwanted weight and bulk but still has enough room for extra layers underneith. The pants also have articulated knees for an unrestrictive but close fit.

Where do they fit in the layering system?

The Makalu Pants are primarily designed as an outer shell, more commonly referred to as a hard shell; which means they work well to protect you from strong winds on cold days, right up to torrential downpours.

Care & Advice

Care and maintenance

To keep your outdoor clothing and equipment in tip top condition and performing to its maximum we recommend the use of Nikwax products. We have been using Nikwax products since day one (26th March 1986) and have found them to be totally reliable, dependable and effective. Today’s Nikwax treatments contain environmentally friendly elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to fabric fibres, leaving the spaces between open and breathable. These stretchy polymers are able to stretch and move with the fabric so they stay put for longer and work better.

Nikwax treatments will not change the look or feel of the fabric and they are all water based, environmentally safe, non-flammable and contain no nasty Fluorocarbons. Nikwax products can be used to clean, re-proof and revitalise all your outdoor technical clothing and equipment.

Waterproof breathable clothing has a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish applied to the face fabric during the manufacturing process. The DWR forces water to bead up and roll off the surface therefore preventing the fabric from absorbing moisture. If the outside of your jacket is soaked in a layer of cold water, the warm damp air within can’t escape and will condense on the inside. This makes the jacket feel cold clammy and can make you think that it’s leaking. The DWR finish is not permanent and needs to be maintained and revitalised to optimise performance.

This three layer waterproof jacket should be cleaned regularly with Nikwax Tech Wash; I wash my jacket about once a month, or more often if it gets really filthy. Regular washing with Tech Wash will maintain the DWR for longer and remove salts and oils that can contaminate the fabric, and it will keep your lovely jacket clean and smelling fresh. Washing can be done in a machine according to the manufacturers care guidelines (on the internal label). First clean out any detergent and conditioner residue from the machine dispenser and then add the required amount of Tech Wash and away you go. Hand washing is also suitable but be sure to rinse the garment well.

When you notice that rain/water is no longer beading up and rolling off it’s time to re-proof. Nikwax TX Direct will re-instate a long lasting DWR to completely rejuvenate your jacket. Re-proofing can also be done in the machine once a garment has been washed. Just add the TX-Direct and use the same programme you used for washing. You can also use the spray-on product on a damp garment that has just been washed.

You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari and never have it serviced, so make sure you regularly wash and re-proof your quality kit.

"I first noticed Trekitt by their fantastic YouTube videos, which were very informative and honest. So I headed on over to the website and looked at various coats to try and determine which to go for. Being a bit of a muppet I didn't really have a clue what was best so contacted customer services who directed me to a few coats but said he would go away (over the weekend!) and think some more and get back to me Monday. I thought it was just a fob off as the conversation had been going a while but low and behold on Monday morning an email appears with suggestions! I was so pleasantly surprised that if I hadn't already been convinced to buy with them, it was concreted then. I bought 2 coats from them the same day and very shortly after they appeared. The fit was exactly as they had suggested it would be, the quality of the items was as described and I am very happy with them. In this day and age of large companies taking a backward step from customer service, it is such a breath of fresh air to be treated with such a personal touch. If I ever need anything outdoorsy, I know exactly where I'm going."
