What is the Montane Resolute Jacket?

The Resolute Jacket is a super warm 800+ fill power down jacket designed to be highly water and win resistant, making it the perfect choice for modern alpinism and mountaineering in the sort of harsh winter conditions where reliable warmth and weather protection is key.

The insulation and cut of the Resolute Jacket lends itself to use as a standalone jacket in the UK’s typically cold and wet winter conditions.  The Resolute is just as at home being used as a belay jacket, thrown over the top of all your layers on those exposed belays and multi-pitches. It is also suited to use underneath a shell jacket in more extreme environments where absolute wind and waterproofing is needed.

What is the Resolute Jacket made from?

The outer of the Resolute Jacket is constructed from Pertex Quantum Pro. Pertex Quantum Pro is a tightly woven nylon rip-stop fabric with a microporous water-resistant coating. This all adds up to a highly weather resistant (both wind and water), durable, lightweight and breathable outer fabric, ideal for a down jacket used in cold and/or damp environments where keeping warm and dry is crucial.

The real heart of this jacket is of course the down insulation that keeps you warm. The downfall of any down product is its limited resistance to water. When down gets saturated with water, it loses its ability to loft and trap air between its clusters, meaning it loses its insulating properties. To combat this, Montane use fluorocarbon-free HyperDRY goose down with 800+ fill power. HyperDry is an environmentally friendly chemical treatment applied to the down to increase its water resistance. In practical terms, the Pertex outer fabric and the HyperDry goose down insulation make for a highly water-resistant jacket that will take a great deal of punishment from mother nature, but it is definitely not waterproof, so remember a waterproof shell for when conditions get really wet and wild.

Cleverly, it isn't just the insulation itself which provides bucket loads of warmth; the way the down is stored in the baffles is the other half of the story. Montane use the warmest form of construction, boxwall, in the body of the jacket and a stitch-through construction in the sleeves. The boxwall construction increases the warmth around your vital organs, while the stitch-through construction reduces the pack size and weight.

The down is traceable both with the industry standard Responsible Down Standard (RDS) and Track My Down. The RDS ensures that the down in a product does not come from birds that have been live-plucked or force-fed and that their welfare has been protected from the time they were hatchlings to when they are slaughtered. All of the fabrics and the insulation inside the jacket are also Bluesign approved.

All of the lovely warm down is wrapped in a PEAQ down lining that is comfortable next to skin, is highly breathable and fast drying.

What are its features?

Starting at the top, the Resolute features a fully adjustable, helmet compatible hood with a stiffened peak. Hood adjustability is taken care of with drawcords, meaning a nice snug fit can be achieved both with and without a climbing helmet in place. It can also be rolled away when not required.

The main zip is a full length two-way YKK Aquaguard Vislon zip with an internal storm flap to keep the worst of the drafts out.

Storage comes in the form of two microfleece lined hand pockets and a single external chest pocket, both with YKK Aquaguard zips and one internal stretch mesh drop pocket, perfect for a spare pair of gloves, a headtorch or phone/gps that needs to be kept warm and dry to keep the batteries in good order.

The sleeves have adjustable cuffs for an optimal fit and the hem features a cinchable drawcord.

The jacket also comes with a Montane dry bag, perfect for stuffing the jacket in when not in use. This dry bag helps keep the pack size to a minimum.

How does the Resolute Jacket fit?

The Resolute Jacket fits relatively snug to the body, maximising its thermal efficiency, but there is still enough room underneath for layers. The back length comes in at 74.5cm (size 12), so the cut is slightly longer than average, allowing for a little more coverage.

Where does it fit in the layering system?

The Resolute jacket is primarily going to be used as an outer layer, however thanks to the relatively trim fit, you're able to slip a shell over the top without an issue if the weather turns foul. It can also be used as an over-layer when stopping to belay, have lunch, coffee etc.

Care & Advice

How Should Your Insulated Jacket Fit?

Insulated jackets are pedantic little things. Too tight and you'll compress the insulation and limit the warmth capabilities of your brand new jacket, too loose and you'll spend hours warming up the dead space inside the jacket. Getting the correct fit isn't just about aesthetics, it will determine how warm you are.

The Incorrect Fit

Too loose: A jacket which is too loose will keep you relatively warm, however it will take far longer to do so and will waste large amounts of your precious energy. An insulated jacket works by trapping the natural heat that your body gives off in the fibres of the insulation; this creates a micro-climate inside your jacket, keeping you warm and toasty. If your jacket is too loose, heat will be able to escape through the hem, the sleeves and the neck of the jacket; it's a little like sticking the heating on in your car with the windows cracked open - it will heat up, just incredibly slowly.

Too tight: A jacket which is too tight is arguably worse than one that is too loose. If your jacket is far too tight, the baffles can compress to a point where the insulation can't loft effectively, limiting the amount of warmth it can trap. Essentially, it won't work!

The Correct Fit
It's a tricky one to explain, but it's somewhere in the middle. You've first got to consider how many layers you'll tend to wear underneath; will you have just a t-shirt then the jacket, or possibly a baselayer, midlayer and then the jacket? When you've figured out your layers and you've popped your insulated jacket over the top, you shouldn't have any dead space inside. The cuffs and hem should be comfortably sealed around your waist and wrists with room to move. You should be able to lift an arm up above your head without the hem of the jacket lifting more than an inch or so, and the sleeves should be long enough that when carrying out the same motion, they aren't mid-way up your forearm. Your shoulders and chest area should have enough room so that your hands can touch behind your back without feeling restricted.

Additional Information
Lastly, consider which activites you'll primarily be carrying out while wearing the jacket. Are you primarily using it as a winter climbing piece, or an everyday/dog walking jacket? You'll find that technical climbing jackets tend to feature a shorter cut, while urban and casual jackets feature a longer cut to offer additional warmth with less mobility.

"I first noticed Trekitt by their fantastic YouTube videos, which were very informative and honest. So I headed on over to the website and looked at various coats to try and determine which to go for. Being a bit of a muppet I didn't really have a clue what was best so contacted customer services who directed me to a few coats but said he would go away (over the weekend!) and think some more and get back to me Monday. I thought it was just a fob off as the conversation had been going a while but low and behold on Monday morning an email appears with suggestions! I was so pleasantly surprised that if I hadn't already been convinced to buy with them, it was concreted then. I bought 2 coats from them the same day and very shortly after they appeared. The fit was exactly as they had suggested it would be, the quality of the items was as described and I am very happy with them. In this day and age of large companies taking a backward step from customer service, it is such a breath of fresh air to be treated with such a personal touch. If I ever need anything outdoorsy, I know exactly where I'm going."
