What is the Alpha IS Jacket?
The Alpha IS Jacket is a bombproof climbing-orientated hardshell and an ultra-warm insulated jacket, all in one. Combining these two layers makes it 18% lighter than wearing similar layers separately and makes it perfect for harsh, unforgiving environments.
What is it made of?
Insulation: Arc'teryx use their exclusive ThermaTek synthetic insulation throughout the Alpha IS. ThermaTek is a fully synthetic insulation designed to provide warmth in all conditions, even when soaking wet. The insulation itself is given a durable water repellent coating to increase its hydrophobic properties even further and is the fastest drying insulation in the Arc'teryx range. It's then laminated to a backing fabric to ensure the insulation is spread out evenly across the jacket, minimising the risk of a cold spot developing. If all of this wasn't enough, an extra layer of Coreloft Continuous 65 insulation has been added to the shoulders for additional warmth.
Fabrics: Surrounding all of this versatile insulation is a 40D nylon coupled with a 2 layer Gore-Tex membrane. The tough 40D nylon acts as a suit of armour and protects the membrane (and you) from abrasion, while the Gore-Tex membrane provides total waterproof and windproof protection. The outer fabric, like the insulation, is also given a durable water repellent coating as another layer of defence.
What are its features?
Starting at the top, the Alpha IS features Arc'teryx's StormHood which will comfortably fit a climbing helmet underneath, adding valuable warmth when stationary. To adjust the hood, there are Cohaesive adjusters built into the fabric itself. These are a little like buttons beneath the fabric that are super easy to use when wearing bulky gloves or mittens and eliminates the risk of long pieces of elastic slapping you in the face. When the hood isn't being used, there is still a tall collar with a soft lining for superior protection. Moving down, the main zip has braking bumps installed to prevent it coming undone during use. Cleverly, there are also Coheasive adjusters in the hem which serve two purposes; one is to seal in warmth, the other is to lock under a climbing harness to prevent the jacket rising up during use.
Pockets wise, you've got an internal zipped chest pocket, an internal dump pocket and two insulated zipped hand pockets. All zips are highly water-resistant (not waterproof), but we'd still recommend keeping valuables on one of the inner pockets. Lastly, an included stuffsack packs the jacket down for compact transportation.
How does it fit?
It features a regular fit overall with a longer length for greater protection. For reference, the centre back length is 78cm in a size medium. Arc'teryx's articulated patterning and gusseted underarms ensures you never feel restricted when climbing.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
The Alpha IS has been designed solely as an outer layer to provide unbeatable protection and warmth in cold, wet conditions. It works best when you're moving constantly and will fit over additional layers (provided you get the right size!) without much restriction if you need even more warmth.
