What are the Konseal FL?

The Konseal FL are some of the most technical, incredibly well made and exceptionally comfortable approach shoes available. Use them in the crag, up the mountains or just as a super comfortable walking shoe, they really are that versatile.

What are the Konseal FL's made of?

Upper: Arc'teryx are always the kings of detail; after all, their trademark motto is 'obsessive design'. The upper of the shoe is made from a water resistant, breathable, tough as nails ripstop with a protective film to add further abrasion resistance. This entire upper half is a single piece of fabric, reducing the amount of seams and stitch points needed to keep the shoe together. Speaking of seams and stitch points, there are very, very few! Arc'teryx fasten every piece of fabric down with micro-sized pieces of taping which glue the fabrics together internally, eliminating the possiblity that a rock, bramble or sharp object of some sort will pull a stitch loose. 1mm thick over-lasted synthetic nubuck is then overlaid over the ripstop upper to resist abuse while climbing, scrambling and walking. A huge moulded rubber toe cap finishes this super durable shoe off and takes the majority of climbing abuse. As you can probably tell by now, the Konseal's are built to last...and last, and last, and last...

Midsole: The midsole of the Konseal's has also been redesigned to offer improved weight with the stiffness required for climbing and approach use. Ledges, smears and tight spaces become more confident, while walking long distances allows you to forget about your feet in blissful comfort. Unlike most midsoles, Arc'teryx's feature a raised sidewall to further improve stability and confidence on technical terrain.

Liner: Slipping your foot into the Konseal's feels effortless and instantly feels 'right'. A 4mm thick Ortholite 3D moulded footbed provides superior comfort and support for long walks and the laces can be adjusted in two positions to further improve the fit around your ankle. The inner of the tongue is also wider than most and features a thick layer of padding for a secure yet not blood flow-limiting fit.

Sole Unit: No one likes heavy footwear. Lugging kilograms of weight around with each step over hours of technical terrain isn't fun. Not only do the Konseal FL's weigh a miniscule 300g, they are also sealed in just about every location to avoid debris collecting and adding further weight. A self-cleaning Vibram Megagrip sole further epitomises the lightweight nature of this shoe by shedding mud and scree without the need for a pointy stick. This sole has also been designed to offer differently shaped lugs in different places on the shoe to ensure optimal performance. For example, larger, sharper lugs are placed at the back of the shoe (the heel) to act as brakes when descending, while a flat 'climbing zone' section allows you to smear with confidence.

How do the Konseal FL's fit?

The Konseal FL's generally fit an average to slightly narrower foot. They have an average volume to offer a precise, stable fit when out on more difficult terrain, but also to leave enough wiggle room for your toes. It also means that they tend to fit quite a wide range of feet. Getting footwear sizing right online can be tricky, so we recommend giving our Footwear Sizing Guide (found below in the Care and Advice section) a quick read.

Here at Trekitt we know all too well of the difficulties people face when purchasing footwear online. The hardest part is being confident that you have picked the correct fitting footwear, so that is what we will cover in this blog (or if you prefer you can CLICK HERE to watch our video).

In our Hereford shop we offer a professional boot fitting service where we assess your feet, find a selection of boots that match you foot shape and most importantly we make sure that they are comfortable. This is easy to do in the shop, where we have access to the right tools, the option of letting you try on as many styles as you like and a knowledgeable member of staff that can communicate directly with you regarding your needs.

But let’s not dwell on what you don’t have, instead we shall teach you how to ascertain your size using some common household objects.

What you will need:

  1. A piece of A4 paper
  2. A pen or pencil
  3. A floor and a flat wall
  4. A ruler or tape measure

What you need to do:

  1. Put on the socks that you intend to use with the footwear you have selected
  2. Place the paper/cardboard on the floor with one end flush against a wall
  3. Stand on the A4 paper with your heel pressed firmly against the wall and your foot pointed forward with the edge of your big toe aligned with the edge of the paper.
  4. Draw a line just in front of your big toe
  5. Measure the distance from the wall edge of the paper to the line you drew
  6. Repeat the process for the other foot
  7. Finally, check the longer of the two measurements against the table below to find your size
Your measurement (cm) UK Size EU Size

NOTE: The above table is only a guide. Manufactures don’t like to make it easy as every single one of them strays from the measurements above.

So, once you have received your chosen footwear please take the time to do these simple tests to check they are actually the right size and that they fit the rest of your foot correctly.

The length test

  1. Whip out the removable footbed from the boots.
  2. Put them on the floor about shoulder-width apart.
  3. With your socks on, stand on the footbeds making sure that your heels are right to the back of the heel cup.
  4. You should now be able to see approximately 2 cm (about an index fingers width) of the footbed poking out in front of your toes.

If you can see this amount of space then you are pretty much on the way to making sure that your boots are the correct size. This space between your toes and the end of the footbed ensures that you will not stub your toes on the inside of the boot when you descend. This can be excruciatingly painful. If you can’t see this amount of space then it’s a good bet that the boots will be too small.

The heel lift test

This test will tell you if the shape of the internal heel cup matches your heel to ensure it holds you securely, especially when ascending steep ground. We are trying to eliminate the dreaded heel blister.

Before you commence this test it is imperative that you have laced the boots correctly.

  1. Tap your heel so it’s as far back in the boot as possible, being sure to keep your foot at a right angle to your leg at all times during the next few steps.
  2. Make sure that the laces have no slack in them across the forefoot by starting at the front of the boot and working the slack backwards and to the top. You should just be able to squeeze the end section of your finger under the laces, not easily, but just about.
  3. If you are wearing shoes then ensure the last upper part of the lacing is tight, not cutting off your circulation tight, but certainly comfortably snug as this will hold your heel back in the heel cup and will reduce any excess slipping (If you are wearing boots, this will be the eyelets that sit just below/inline the ankle).
  4. Please also make sure when trying out boots that use all the lace hooks, don’t be tempted to leave the top one undone as your foot needs to be held securely right in the back of the boot.
  5. Now that your boots are done up properly stand up on your tiptoes and walk on the spot on the balls of your feet as if you are walking up a steep hill. If your heels lift more than approximately 5mm from the footbed you may need to pull the laces tighter, or the boots may just be the wrong shape for you.

The toe wiggle test

This test is designed to check whether you have enough room around your toes. Your toes need to be in a happy place, they need plenty of room to wiggle without being squashed together, or cramped in from above. However they don’t want to be swimming around in acres of space either, this will cause friction blisters and stability problems when traversing hillsides. So, with the boots done up properly, walk around your house and make sure that your toes can wiggle freely.

Home Trial Period

However, even after the most rigorous assessment and testing, there is no better way to be absolutely sure than to have the boots on your feet for an extended period of time. We therefore offer our Home Trial Period which gives you the opportunity to wear the boots around your house to give you an indication of how they feel before you venture outside. We recommend that during the Home Trial Period that you wear the boots for as long as possible and at different times of the day, wear them up and down stairs, when moving around and when resting, you can even sleep in them if you want.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: During the Home Trial Period we insist that the boots are worn indoors only. All footwear must be returned in a new and perfect condition with the original packaging and a proof of purchase. We retain the right to refuse to refund or exchange if footwear shows any sign of being worn outside.

Professional Opinion

Written: Harry Bradbury

Introduction: Right, so let’s start this on a complete unbiased note - I had a pair of Arc’teryx’s original Acrux shoes and really didn’t get on with them; I could wear them for an hour or so before becoming crippled around my Achilles. The Konseal’s, however, are a dream to wear. The elimination of the sock and the change in overall heel shape has resulted in the only pair of approach shoes I’ve ever enjoyed wearing.

First impressions: When you first pull them out of the box, they feel far lighter, better made and better looking (in my opinion). The bend point around the toe box looks better suited to prolonged use and the heel is noticeably less bulky. The overall shoe looks a little more trim, lower down and less clumpy than the mk1 Acrux shoes.

Fit: So, this was the issue with the old mk1 Acrux shoes, the ‘sock fit’ just didn’t fit many people, and if they did manage to squeeze their foot in, many had the same issue as I did around the achilles. The Konseal’s are about as far away as you can possibly get in terms of comfort; they’re like the angel offspring of a slipper and a climbing shoe. Slipping your foot into the Konseal’s takes far less effort than Arc’teryx’s mk1 Acrux shoes as the sock has been eliminated, meaning you no longer have the two fabric straps to lever your foot in with; sometimes it’s best to not reinvent the wheel. That being said, the sock fit within the Bora range of boots is exceptionally comfortable and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. I mentioned earlier that the heel is noticeably less bulky - this is true, however the height is still exactly the same, meaning it feels more supportive than past approach shoes I’ve owned yet still comfortable enough to wear for multi-day trips. The Achilles pain which plagued the mk1 Acrux is now completely gone and I can (and have) worn these for upwards of 12 hours a day without a single issue. Heel rub is also non-existent, as is any discomfort from the inside. Provided you get the lacing right, the length is also spot on; I’m usually a UK 10.5 and the Konseal’s were no different. Not once did my toes contact the front of the shoe, even during long, steep descents.

Construction: Arc’teryx have always been one step up when it comes to overall construction and abrasion resistance. After all, they were the first to begin placing seams inside hardshell jackets rather than on the outside, now it’s the norm. You could accurately predict that other footwear manufacturers will follow eventually, (much like the introduction to bitcoin) as this construction has no negatives whatsoever. Rather than stitching various pieces of fabric together, Arc’teryx heat-laminate synthetic materials to one another, creating their seamless upper. The benefit to using a synthetic rather than leather or suede is that the Konseal’s don’t soak up water and dry far faster. The outer is smooth and sleek, eliminating stitch points and reducing the likelihood that you’ll catch a piece of fabric or a loose thread. This construction also allows you to use fewer pieces of material, increasing durability, breathability and abrasion resistance. Since we’re on the topic of breathability, we’ll cover that here too. In minus conditions I have to stop myself before I leave the house, checking I have a thick enough sock or bringing a pair of Gore-Tex boots as a backup incase the Konseal’s are too cold - they’re that breathable! I would compare them most similarly to a running shoe; the sensation of a cool breeze passing freely through the sleek outer fabric is something you never grow tired of during summer months.

fullsizeoutput_b5

Sole: This is largely unchanged throughout Arc’teryx’s history of shoes, and for good reason - it works! The Konseal’s use Vibram’s Megagrip compound, a super soft yet surprisingly long lasting rubber which grips to rock like not a lot else. Honestly, you can walk up almost vertical rock faces (maybe a little exaggerated), but it’s pretty amazing stuff. I can’t comment hugely on longevity, however to put it into perspective, I’ve owned these for around 6 months at the time of writing this review I have used them every other day since then and haven’t noticed a difference in tread depth, they’re just a little more rounded than before. A flat ‘climbing zone’ area has been placed on the toe area to increase accuracy when climbing and reinforcements are placed on the upper toe and heel for general abuse. Speaking of accuracy, you don’t really notice how accurate these are until you’re half way up the route you thought you couldn’t do. It’s one of those features which sits out of the limelight but makes a huge difference to your confidence when climbing, walking and scrambling. In conditions other than rock, they’re also very good. In thick mud you do slide around a bit, but that’s to be expected and not their intended purpose. Wet grass, light mud and roots are all something the Konseal has no issue with; you feel fully confident in their ability to provide grip pretty much all of the time.

IMG_9442IMG_9447

Midsole/footbed: The Konseal FL’s, as the name suggests, are designed to be fast and light (FL = fast & light), therefore they’re noticeably less stiff than the mk1 Acrux’s, but about average in terms of approach shoes in general. For me this is ideal; I’m around 75kg, 6ft 2 and a slim build, therefore a super stiff shoe isn’t necessary. They hit the sweet spot in this regard; not too stiff to limit their climbing ability, however stiff enough to scramble and walk in for upwards of 8 hours. The footbed is also pretty much unchanged, which is another positive. The issue I have had with several sets of approach shoes in the past has been down to the feel underfoot - most were simply too firm. The Konseal’s are just about perfect, soft enough to walk in all day without discomfort but thin enough to allow a sensitive feel when climbing.

Dislikes/improvement suggestions: The laces are destructively thin, as with the first pair of Acrux shoes I owned. They dig into your fingers and are a pain to lace when your hands are cold; a slightly thicker set will be added to my pair soon! I’d also like to see a little more padding on the tongue too, this would prevent the laces digging into the top of your foot over long durations. Other than that, they’re flawless.

Conclusion: I can’t stress enough how much of an improvement these are over Arc’teryx’s first range of approach shoes. They’re the only pair of approach shoes I’ve ever actually enjoyed wearing. The fit is spot on, the feel underfoot is perfect (soft yet precise), the elimination of the sock means they’re far easier to whip on and off, the heel is exceptionally comfortable and hasn’t once created a hotspot, the sole is sticky, long lasting and precise, the seamless outer construction is tough yet stupidly breathable and I would happily recommend these to anyone needing a near-perfect shoe for approach, walking, scrambling and general outdoor use.
