Founded in 1862 by Kaspar Tanner, Mammut began as a family business based in a small town in the North of Switzerland. The team produced Mammut's first ever ropes, which were originally developed for agricultural use. Almost a century later, in the 1950's, Mammut launched their very first glacier rope, opening a gateway into technical outdoor gear. Made with nylon yarn, the rope proved to be a milestone for alpine safety. In 1952, the company began trading under the name of Mammut, and shifted the focus to ropes specifically for outdoor pursuits, primarily for mountaineering and sailing. Mammut continued to introduce new, innovative equipment to the industry, including their first avalanche transceiver in 1969, and eventually expanded their collection to hardware, apparel, and footwear, which they're still producing today.
