Rab's humble beginnings started in 1981, in the attic of a small, terraced house in
Sheffield. In this little house, Rab Carrington, an experienced climber and mountaineer,
made the first sleeping bag to bear his name. Stranded in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while on
route to an expedition in Patagonia in 1973, Rab found himself in need of money and started
working for his climbing friend, Hector Vieytes. Little did he know, the practical skills he
learned during this time would come to redefine the future of technical sleeping bags.
Drawing from the wealth of his years of experience in the mountains, in 1981 Rab created his
first innovative hand-stitched sleeping bags, which quickly gained popularity amongst the
local climbing community. Word soon spread, and Rab's Sheffield attic quickly became a
factory floor, creating sleeping bags and jackets for customers far and wide.
Today, those honest, hard-wearing designs can be found all over the world, wherever
adventurous individuals face up to the elements. From Himalayan peaks to cold, crisp
evenings around a campfire, Rab's clothing and equipment have become synonymous with
high-performance excellence among all manner of outdoor enthusiasts, including climbers,
hikers and mountaineers.
Rab's commitment to the future
Rab prides themselves on producing quality, hard-wearing clothing and equipment that, let's
be honest, you'd rather repair than replace. They recognise the challenges facing the
outdoor clothing industry and are proud to now be a climate-neutral company. They're on a
journey to reduce the impact of their business and drive meaningful change in the way they
make, ship, and use their clothing and equipment.
Rab has a variety of ethical processes they currently adhere to operate more responsibly,
including providing detailed material transparency for all products, an increased use of
recycled materials, in-house product repair services and fair working conditions for all
employees and factory workers.
