Arc'teryx's Norvan SL is the pinnacle of mountain running jackets. It's their lightest, most breathable and most packable shell to date thanks to their ShakeDry technology.
What is ShakeDry? When constructing a 'normal' shell jacket, you have an inner fabric, then a membrane, then an outer fabric (or face fabric). The inner and outer fabrics sandwich the membrane inside so it's fully protected against abrasion and general wear and tear. However, running jackets aren't designed to be forced against jagged rocks and across rainforests, therefore the outer fabric is simply a barrier making it harder for your sweat to escape. ShakeDry technology eliminates the need for a face fabric altogether, meaning this unbelievably breathable jacket weighs less than your phone. This also exponentially increases the breathability of the Norvan, as your sweat is pushed out by the membrane into the air rather than into the face fabric.
You may be thinking that without a face fabric, the Norvan sacrifices on protection, however Arc'teryx are ready to prove you wrong. The Norvan SL uses a Gore-Tex membrane, meaning it's fully waterproof, fully windproof and durable enough for a range of running uses.
Moving onto the features of the jacket, you're given a lightweight, fitted hood with an elasticated brim which can be packed down and stowed in the collar of the jacket with the a snap. A watertight front zip keeps the water out, while shaped and elasticated cuffs prevent cold wind blowing up your sleeves. An elasticated hem is also supplied to prevent mud and water flicking up from your shoes up your back.
Lastly, did I mention that this jacket packs down to the size of an apple?
