What is the Montane Resolute Jacket?
The Resolute Jacket is a super warm 800+ fill power down jacket designed to be highly water and win resistant, making it the perfect choice for modern alpinism and mountaineering in the sort of harsh winter conditions where reliable warmth and weather protection is key.
The insulation and cut of the Resolute Jacket lends itself to use as a standalone jacket in the UK’s typically cold and wet winter conditions. The Resolute is just as at home being used as a belay jacket, thrown over the top of all your layers on those exposed belays and multi-pitches. It is also suited to use underneath a shell jacket in more extreme environments where absolute wind and waterproofing is needed.
What is the Resolute Jacket made from?
The outer of the Resolute Jacket is constructed from Pertex Quantum Pro. Pertex Quantum Pro is a tightly woven nylon rip-stop fabric with a microporous water-resistant coating. This all adds up to a highly weather resistant (both wind and water), durable, lightweight and breathable outer fabric, ideal for a down jacket used in cold and/or damp environments where keeping warm and dry is crucial.
The real heart of this jacket is of course the down insulation that keeps you warm. The downfall of any down product is its limited resistance to water. When down gets saturated with water, it loses its ability to loft and trap air between its clusters, meaning it loses its insulating properties. To combat this, Montane use fluorocarbon-free HyperDRY goose down with 800+ fill power. HyperDry is an environmentally friendly chemical treatment applied to the down to increase its water resistance. In practical terms, the Pertex outer fabric and the HyperDry goose down insulation make for a highly water-resistant jacket that will take a great deal of punishment from mother nature, but it is definitely not waterproof, so remember a waterproof shell for when conditions get really wet and wild.
The down is traceable both with the industry standard Responsible Down Standard (RDS) and Track My Down. The RDS ensures that the down in a product does not come from birds that have been live-plucked or force-fed and that their welfare has been protected from the time they were hatchlings to when they are slaughtered.
All of the lovely warm down is wrapped in a PEAQ down lining that is comfortable next to skin, is highly breathable and fast drying.
What are its features?
Starting at the top, the Resolute features a fully adjustable, helmet compatible hood with a stiffened peak. Hood adjustability is taken care of with drawcords, meaning a nice snug fit can be achieved both with and without a climbing helmet in place. It can also be rolled away when not required.
A boxwall construction in the main body of the jacket and stitched through sleeves ensures maximum warmth retention in the core and freedom of movement/articulation in the arms.
The main zip is a full length two-way YKK Aquaguard Vislon zip with an internal storm flap to keep the worst of the drafts out.
Storage comes in the form of two microfleece lined hand pockets and a single external chest pocket, both with YKK Aquaguard zips and one internal stretch mesh drop pocket, perfect for a spare pair of gloves, a headtorch or phone/gps that needs to be kept warm and dry to keep the batteries in good order.
The sleeves have adjustable cuffs for an optimal fit and the hem features a cinchable drawcord.
The jacket also comes with a Montane dry bag, perfect for stuffing the jacket in when not in use. This dry bag helps keep the pack size to a minimum.
How does the Resolute Jacket fit?
The Resolute Jacket fits relatively snug to the body, maximising its thermal efficiency, but there is still enough room underneath for layers. The back length comes in at 80cm (size medium), so the cut is slightly longer than average, allowing for a little more coverage.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
The Resolute jacket is primarily going to be used as an outer layer, however thanks to the relatively trim fit, you're able to slip a shell over the top without an issue if the weather turns foul. It can also be used as an over-layer when stopping to belay, have lunch, coffee etc.
