What is the Xenair Alpine Jacket?
The Xenair Alpine is a warm, breathable, synthetically insulated jacket perfect for fast-paced mountain adventures in changeable conditions. Made for high-energy activities like ski-touring, mountaineering and alpine ascents, it uses body-mapped, dual-weight insulation to provide exceptional performance and breathability to help you reach the summit and stay warm whilst you revel in the achievement.
What is it made from?
Insulation: The Xenair Alpine combines two weights of the exceptionally clever PrimaLoft Gold Active+ synthetic insulation, which contains 55% recycled material. Body-mapped for the ultimate performance, it uses 133gsm PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation Active to the front, back sides, outer arms and hood. The centre spine, sides and underarms use 100gsm of the same insulation to reduce the overall bulk of the jacket when layering underneath a hardshell jacket, whilst increasing the breathability in these key areas.
Primaloft Gold Active+ uses a special fibre structure, allowing it to be combined with highly breathable linings and outer fabrics for better moisture management and comfort, without compromising on thermal performance.
Fabrics: The Xenair Alpine uses a lightweight 20D Pertex Quantum Air outer fabric with exceptional breathability and weather resistance, meaning you won't have to chop and change layers when you start picking up the pace. This outer fabric is treated with a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) to encourage light rain and snow to bead off the jacket instead of soaking in. Although this provides light weather protection, please note that this doesn't make the jacket waterproof.
The durable lining of the Xenair Alpine uses a 20D recycled Nylon fabric, which helps wick moisture away from your body and is exceptionally soft next to your skin.
What are its features?
Starting from the top, the Xenair Alpine Jacket features a helmet-compatible hood with a stiffened peak to protect the face from falling snow and rain. The hood is elasticated around the face for a close fit and can easily be adjusted on the move using the drawcord at the back of the hood.
The Xenair Alpine Jacket uses two different weights of synthetic insulation in a body-mapped design to maintain excellent warmth whilst allowing for optimal breathability and movement.
Using durable YKK zippers throughout, the jacket features a two-way central zip opening designed for optimal use with a climbing harness. The zip has an insulated internal baffle to stop it from catching on your clothes and keep cold air out. It also features a soft chin guard to prevent discomfort or irritation around the face when the jacket is fully zipped.
For storage, there are two concealed zipped chest pockets, ideal for storing close-to-hand items such as energy gels, trail snacks, ski-pass or a small guidebook. Two lower concealed hand pockets provide space for storing bulkier items such as a mobile phone, GPS device, spare gloves and additional snacks.
Articulated sleeves help provide a better range of movement for climbing and scrambling across technical terrain. Glove and ski-mitt-friendly adjustable cuffs and an elasticated hem allow you to cinch in the jacket for maximum heat retention, keeping warm air in and cold drafts out.
How does it fit?
Featuring Rab's regular fit, the Xenair Alpine Jacket sits close enough to the body to perform well as an insulating layer but has enough room to pop a few layers underneath.
Disclaimer: Going forward, Rab has stopped providing stuff sacks for most of their insulated jackets as a responsible step toward eliminating fabric waste. This helps reduce the creation of unnecessary fabric, cord, and trim from unused stuff sacks while also saving the potential emissions used to manufacture them. Instead, they are available to purchase separately and are now made from offcut materials and end-of-roll fabrics for an even lower environmental impact.
